  1. I'm not certain, but I believe the Fremont area is the original Las Vegas strip. It had fallen into disrepair and had become a not very savory part of town (and the surrounding area still is), but the Fremont strip itself has been rehabilitated and a canopy installed on which they project light shows with various themes. They have a very entertaining one about aliens and Area 51.

It wouldn't be my first choice for the Star Trek Experience, I would prefer it stayed somewhere on the main strip, but it's better than not at all.

  2. For anybody already looking forward to the 2009 ornaments, here's what is planned:

    1.

    1. "The Menagerie", STAR TREK, Hear Captain Pike's chair beep and see it blink (one or two times) as he responds to Captain Kirk's questions
    2. K't'inga-class Klingon Battle Cruiser, STAR TREK: The Motion Picture, 30th anniversary, See the battle cruiser's glowing torpedo launchers illuminate
    3. The Illia Probe, STAR TREK: The Motion Picture, 30th anniversary Special Edition, Limited-quantity
    4. Star Trek Hand Phaser, STAR TREK, See lights flash and hear sound effects as well as lines of dialogue from the original STAR TREK television series

  3. Whether or not Chris Pine can live up to Shatner probably depends on each individual viewer's willingness to accept him as Kirk. IMO, that depends on the attitude said viewer has when he enters the theatre. I feel I have an advantage in that regard because I have seen Mr. Pine in absolutely nothing. By that I mean none of his previous works. I will be ready, willing and able to see him as the new Captain Kirk. Because I love Trek. And I want new, quality Trek to continue. love_star_trek_by_conworth.gif

  4. Star Trek premiered on September 8, 1966, 42 years ago today!

It was 42 years ago today...

On September 8th, 1966, the world was transported for the first time to the 23rd century and the final frontier. On TV screens across America, "The Man Trap" introduced Star Trek and ushered in a franchise that endures to this day. Some fans recall the day, but for many more, they were too young or not even yet born to experience that moment in TV history.

    "The first adult space adventure"

Although science fiction was not new, it was new to do an hour long sci-fi space drama in the evening. Star Trek was taking space adventure to the adults and treating it seriously. Here are some promos and interviews done before Star Trek aired.

  5. Sorry these pictures are really poor quality. We were there before I got my good camera. It breaks my heart that I never got the chance to go again after I got a half-way decent camera. :roflmao:

The first time we went, my youngest daughter had just gotten braces. We were walking through the museum, when a female klingon came up behind her. I told her to turn around and when she saw the klingon, she about jumped out of her skin. The klingon then asked her what manner of weapon she had in her mouth. Not missing a beat, my daughter replied that she used it to bite her sister.

The second time we went was just months before my husband's lung transplant and he required oxygen full-time. He was walking very slowly out of the borg ride when my daughter and I were lagging behind to look at something in one of the shops. The silver-haired klingon and the borg were standing there, and not realizing that my daughter and I were with the man with oxygen, made a comment about that man carrying his own air supply. It wasn't what they said so much that impressed me, but the way they said it - in a totally sympathetic way. I was impressed.

    Anyway, the pics:

  6. I was just in the chatroom and it was working fine until I typed in a bunch of non-sequiters and it gave me this message:

Err 3582. Warning! Your actions may prevent further access to the chat room.

So I apologized and didn't have any further problems. :Hmmm...:

  7. Well, I usually pledge to have an open mind and go in with a positive attitude in things like this. With Nemesis, that was difficult to do because so much had been leaked (even the script) that people had judged it a failure before they even stepped into the theatre. Personally, I rarely see a movie more than once in the theatre, but I buy the DVD and I've been known to buy merchandise...

  8. I read the article yesterday and it seems to me there might be better ways to "make their contribution more visible." If they want to do away with the old stereotypes, they might need a new PR person. A few well-placed articles and stories of their contributions and achievements might be a better idea as I'm sure there are many, many people who have no idea what a nun does. I'm a firm believer in beauty coming from the inside anyway, so to judge the outside beauty of a nun has little meaning to me. It does, however, state in the article that the participating nuns will fill out a profile about their life and vocation. Unfortunately, they are expected to be judged by "the nun they consider a model." :Hmmm...:

  9. Casting Zoe Saldana as Uhura was a stroke of brilliance on Abram's part if you ask me. She's one of the few of the new actors (the other being Quinto) that I was actually familiar with before they were cast. She's talented and beautiful and will fill Nichelle Nichols' shoes nicely...

Going on opening weekend would be fun. Of course I didn't even go on opening weekend for Indy, but maybe for Star Trek....

  10. I really like the 'B' story in this episode, where pregnant Lwaxana Troi shows up to enlist Odo's help in protecting her from her estranged husband, more than the main storyline about a mysterious alien woman who victimizes Jake to harvest his creative energy.

Lwaxana has gone and got married to Jeyal and miraculously becomes pregnant. The catch is that the child is male and according to the husband's tradition, any male child will be raised exclusively by males. All children are not even aware there is an opposite sex until the age of 16. Odo discovers that in order to divorce her current husband she need only marry someone else. But there's a catch there, too, because the new husband must convince everybody, including the former husband, that he is sincere in his desire to marry her and that he loves her. Odo is successful in convincing Jeyal of his sincere intentions, but almost starts believing it himself. In typical Lwaxana fashion, after the ceremony she tells Odo she is leaving for Betazed to have her child. She expresses her love for Odo but is also convinced that he will never love her as she loves him.

Lwaxana is a beloved character, carried over from TNG, and she should have had the major emphasis in this episode. Instead we get the 'Jake gets in over his head and has to be rescued' storyline which is not nearly as interesting as the Lwaxana/Odo storyline. IMO!

So, anyway, I gave it a 4. :hand:
