  1. I'm sorry, I know I'm nitpicking, but it will forever annoy me that this McCoy doesn't have blue eyes. Ever since I was 12 years old, Leonard McCoy's blue eyes were a standout in almost every episode and movie. This Leonard McCoy doesn't have blue eyes?? I just don't understand. I hope I can look past that minor (?) detail.

Spock has the same look on his face while choking Kirk that Syler does right before he slices open someone's brain.......

    Yes, he does!!

  2. I've always been impressed by the quality. Over the years they've come out with some really good ones, like the Deep Space Nine one, which is really too big for an "ornament," but you can set it on a stand (included) and hear Captain Sisko speak. There were also miniature ships that year which could be purchased separately, and were made to hang from the Deep Space Nine model. Every year I look forward to unpacking my Star Trek ornaments.

I am really impressed with the communicator this year. The sounds it makes are exactly like the sound of the communicator on the TV show.

And of course no one can forget the very first 1991 ornament of the original Enterprise, which sometimes sells on E-bay for around $200.

  3. Review of Hallmark 2008 Communicator Ornament and 2009 Preview

October 11-12th, Hallmark stores are celebrating their annual "Ornament Debut" weekend with in-store parties. Star Trek fans have reason to join the festivities because one of the best Star Trek ornaments ever is now available, the TOS Communicator. Trekmovie.com continues coverage of the Hallmark line with a detailed look at the new ornament, and news of next year’s line.

    Communicate with Santa

The Communicator represents the 49th Star Trek Christmas ornament from Hallmark. The item is an excellent miniaturized version of the communicator from the days of Captain Kirk. Especially impressive are the frenetic display of the three lights (appropriately energetic, these lights will look great on a tree) and the number of phrases from the show featured when the two buttons are pressed. While the miniaturized size takes some getting used to (it is about 1/2 the size of the real communicator), it is good that Hallmark didn’t scale their ornament 1:1 because an opened communicator of full size would have been ungainly on a tree. As a bonus, this ornament is a fun toy, perfect for display and play during the entire year.

In addition to the opening and closing sound, there are fifteen additional voice effects, more than any other Hallmark ornament ever. Pushing the two buttons accesses Original Series phrases from Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and Uhura. See and hear the communicator ornament in action in the video below.

Priced at $18.50 (the usual price for electronic ornaments from Hallmark), the communicator is available starting today (although some stores were selling early for lucky fans). The Communicator joins the already available 2008 ornaments of the USS Reliant and the Trouble with Tribbles.

    A look into Christmas future

For 2009 Hallmark is planning on moving up to four ornaments, which they haven’t done since 2004. TrekMovie previously provided a sneak peek from Comic Con of one of the ornaments, a scene from "The Menagerie" featuring Captain Pike, Kirk, and Spock. We now know what the other three ornaments planned for 2009 are. The second ornament will be based on a TOS phaser, to go along with this year’s communicator ornament. There will also be two movie related ornaments, but not the movie you might be thinking of. Fans might be assuming there will be ornaments related to JJ Abrams new Star Trek movie, but actually Hallmark ornaments based on the Trek films have always come out the year after the film due to the time needed to make the ornaments. 2009 may be the year of JJ Abram’s revitalization of Star Trek, but it is also the 30th Anniversary of the release of the original "revitalization" feature film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In honor of that film Hallmark will release a K’t'inga Class Klingon Battlecruiser featured in the film. Kevin Dilmore, who in addition to being a Star Trek novelist also works for Hallmark, promises the Klingon ship will be "complete with incredible detail of the hull plating and glowing torpedo launchers". The second TMP Hallmark item planned for 2009 is a limited edition Ilia Probe ornament. So far the only picture available for 2009 is for the "Menagerie" scene, shown at Comic Con. The 2009 ornaments should be available in the Summer and Fall of 2009.

  4. Johnny Depp to star in more Disney projects, including "Pirates 4"

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Superstar actor Johnny Depp has signed on to three new Disney projects, including the fourth installment of the blockbuster "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, the entertainment industry newspaper Variety confirmed Thursday.

Along with the reprisal of off-beat pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, Depp will star as the long-suffering Native American sidekick Tonto in a new version of the iconic "Lone Ranger," produced by hit producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

If this wasn't enough for the 45-year-old actor, Depp will also play the Mad Hatter in director Tim Burton's adaptation of the classic "Alice in Wonderland," using a mix of 3D animation and performance capture technology similar to that used for 2007's "Beowulf."

The announcements for "Ranger," "Wonderland" and "an additional role" were made before a crowd of roaring fans in Hollywood Wednesday when Depp appeared at the Walt Disney Showcase, a preview of the studio's productions over the next few years.

The "Pirates 4" confirmation arrived early Thursday through the actor's representatives in Variety.

The franchise has been a worldwide phenomenon since the first installment in 2003, earning more than 2.6 billion dollars at the box office.

Fans are rejoicing the actor's reunion with director Burton, who has created the milestone projects of Depp's career, including his breakout role in the 1990 blockbuster "Edward Scissorhands," and 2005's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."

Like many of Depp's roles, the new Disney projects seek to attract as many adult viewers as they do younger fans.

No premiere dates for any of the projects have been announced.

  5. While this isn't one of my very favorite DS9 episodes, it does have some good points. The fact that Odo is a solid now allows the writers to explore the character more and do a bit more with him than before when he was basically indestructable. So they take advantage of that when they expose Quark and Odo to a Class L planet where they must reach high ground to get a message out so they can be rescued. Conveniently, the two get into a little scuffle and Odo breaks his leg. Amid the mutual hating between the two characters, which is carried through to the very final scene, and in fact Quark claims that he is taking Odo along after the accident only as emergency rations, the writers are cleverly giving another insight into the complicated relationship between the two characters.

The Jake/Nog story is a little weak and only serves to illustrate that Nog is becoming a dedicated and hard-working Starfleet cadet and Jake is trying to grow up. Neither of which was really necessary.

The other point I liked about this episode was Quark's reference to Fizzbin in the very beginning.

So basically, Quark and Odo don't really hate each other, which we already knew. And Jake and Nog aren't little children anymore, which we also already knew.

  6. Just stay on Fremont Street itself. It is very well-lit and really a fun place. My daughters and I went alone, we were able to park in a lot directly adjoining the strip because the lot attendant thought my daughters were cute, and we spent an entire evening there. My youngest was underage at that time, so we didn't go into any of the casinos but there was plenty of other stuff to do. Lots of entertainment.

I could only find a couple of pictures but I'll go ahead and post them. For some reason my daughter thought it was important to get a picture of Binion's. Something about a poker tournament...

And if you look past my two cute daughters, you can get a sense of the atmosphere:
