I give up on UPN ENT promos!

Recommended Posts

Wednesday, my dad didn't enjoy ENT becuase it was a psychological thriller. That's understandable, but based on next week's ENT promo, he thinks the show went down the drain! Good grief, I'm so sick of decieving ENT promos! Why can't they just promote the actual plot and not some minor part of the story???

I find it just a little annoying. One would think the real stories would be good enough, that they wouldn't have to deceive you into thinking it's about something else entirely. But since my Fox station never runs any promos, it's not a big issue.

I agree TM, didn't the promoters of NEM get slammmed for giving away too many true important plots details. I don't mind that ENT promos are tricky, saves the suspense of what really happens for when it really matters; Wed @ 8pm.

Well it might be a bit boring if they outlined the entire main plotline. What would be the point of watching the show?

I didn't say they should give away the plot. However, they should...

Click for Spoiler:

promote the Xindi-Insectoid egg story, and not the munity story which is probably the end of the episode.

I can't believe some of you are moaning about promos.  Here's a thought:  Get off your butt and away from the TV for 30 seconds - it'll do wonders for your cardiovascular system.

:force: I'm complaining becuase UPN just lost a viewer due to it's stupid previews. (Not me, my dad.)

:force: Yes but you are asking for the promo to give details of the major plot.

The function of a promo is to promote the episode and do it in such as way that makes the viewer excited, this does not necessarily mean that they are going to pick the major plotline to focus on. In fact it is more sensible to expand on a minor plot given the time in which they have to advertise and it also allows the viewer to come to the episode without foreknowledge to everything that is going to happen.

Of course they are decieving, they are suppose to be.They show little snippets that are out of context and when youn think you know what its about you watch the show and its nothing like you thought. It makes me want to watch the show more.

Its like the recent promo for Stargate where they show Samantha Carter presiding at a memorial service right after they show Col. O'Neill getting shot in the chest by a staff weapon. This whole week I thought " Man did they kill Jack?"

The promos make me want to watch more to see whats really going on.

I don't like being decieved. ;)

All advertising is meant to decieve and/or persuade to some degree. If you don't like it then you have a simple option...ignore them.

That's exactly why I don't like advertising these days. Advertising used to be straight forward and to the point, now it's all about decieving you so you'll buy their product. ;)

Then you feel the same way about Stargates deceiving promos?

I think the ENT promo deceptions are further consequences of the changes to the show. Look at promos from seasons 1 & 2; they were almost totally honest in comparisons to recent (season 3) previews. I think a war between B&B and the bashers has erupted, take for example the number of episodes penned by B&B which ALL laid the sexual themes on heavy and thick. B&B is practically laughing in the faces of the bashers, they could be sending us a message not to fret over the security of ENT. I believe the same has to do with the promos, they mix it up really well just to throw the 'enemy' off the scent and keep them barking up the wrong trees. Just relax Captain, don't make yourself into one of the enemy.

I think advertising has always been about that, but with each generation the audience becomes more aware of the techniques used, this is why advertising is always evolving. ;)

Why not just advertise the product as it is and let the consumer decide if they want it instead of trying to decieve them into buying it? ;)

Because advertising is not about 'letting the consumer decide', it is about persuading the consumer to buy your product.

When it comes to products I'm going to consume on use on my body I totally agree, I can't stand the misrepresentations that occurs in every commercial (:)) but for TV shows? ;) Hardly.

The SG-1 promos I see in syndication aren't deceptive, they promo the plot without giving squat away. ;)

I guess you did not see Stargates promo's from this week, it was very decieving and made me want to see it even more!

We don't get promo's we're lucky to get Enterprise (and it is only in off hours). I watched this one on st.com - whatever the script is actually about it will be nothing like what the promo set it up to be. For all I know that conversation between Trip and T'Pol was about them sleeping together not anything to do with the Captain's orders.

As for deceptive commercials: that's why it helps to think. Those cereals that say more vitiman B than a glass of orange juice. Well, considering OJ isn't a source of vit B that's not surprising. They by law have to tell the truth - it's just meaningless truth.

My favorite all time commercial was back in the pre-pampers day - there was the baby specialist teaching a class...and this new parent asks "what does it mean when a diaper gives off an ammonia odor?" And the commercial jumps in with this catchy phrase...ammonia signifies wetness. Do you know how wet that baby would have to be? I mean do people really not know if a diaper is wet you should change it? Thirty years later I'm still incredulous. ;)

i cant believe it captain:

Click for Spoiler:

the main plot would be the mutiny....they find an incubation pod and the crew must help the enemy - thus for me : B plot=Xindi eggs, A-plot=Mutiny, the crew not happy about it. Although the plots would go B-A

I think it's the reverse. ;)

Hey, if you know the promos are deceiving, how can you be deceived by them so much? Just look at it and say, oh, so that's what's going to create some tension in the show next week or supply the B-plot. Nobody's going to stop watching a show they like just because of promos - obviously there's something else to your father giving up on Enterprise.

the B-plot is as i said it is....the A-plot turns into the B-plot.

Click for Spoiler:

A=Instectoid eggs

B=Mutiny

the mutiny results from the A-plot, and becomes the B-plot.

He's very opinionated and a big history buff, he's also totally against mutinies. That's why he thought's stories went down the toilet after seeing the preview. ;) I had to give away the episode plot for him to even consider watching the episode. *sigh* :)

Oh, I'm not really bothered. I just want to put in perspective what a commercial is worth: (try to imagine a smiley here that looks like a lump of something you'd rather not see).

Anyway, good on you for having a life.
