PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A program that works to help former prisoners make the transition back into society was dealt a setback when its offices were burglarized.

Police say the thief or thieves broke into the People Organized Working Evolving Reaching Inc. office in Washtenaw County's Pittsfield Township sometime between March 31 and April 1.

The Ann Arbor News says a laptop computer, a safe box, 30 money orders and 30 gift cards from various businesses and other items valued at about $3,100 were stolen.

POWER is a subcontractor for the statewide Michigan Prison Re-entry Initiative, which provides parolees with transportation, job training, mentoring and help in finding a place to live.

POWER's executive director, Denese Brown, says the burglary is disappointing.

You just KNOW that the burglars were some of the people they were "councelling"..... :vbg:

While the normal assumption would be that it was one of those that were being counseled, it is possible that it was someone who just did not like what the organization was doing. There are many people out there that do not believe that former convicts deserve to have any assistance, as they do not accept that by having served their sentence that they have paid their debt to society.
