Don't get me wrong, SG will never ever replace Trek, but I was just wondering do you think Star Gate is the next big thing?

I mean, they already have Star Gate SG-1 and Star Gate Atlantis. In a few years, there will probably be another Star Gate series. I've just been thinking about it. What are your thoughts.

p.s. I've never seen one episode of either Star Gate series, but I do know that Trek cast member have been special guests on this series.

I voted no. I don't think there will ever be another phenomenon like Trek. I'm not sure how much appeal it holds to non-sci-fi fans. Like Gamera, I've never watched either series and have no desire to watch them. For the most part, Trek is the only sci-fi I watch.

I Myself Try To Watch All Things Sci-Fi. Some I Lke, Some I Don't. I Love Stargate And While I Doubt It Will Ever Be The Huge PopCuture Phenomenon That Star Trek Became, But It's Still Has A HUGE Following.

I Love All The Trek And Wars Refrences They Make Sometimes :congrats:

Though Quality Of The Show Has Been Better In The Past Seasons.

Stargate is definitely better than the last two Trek series. TOS aired on a major network in a time when there were few alternative networks. It is unlikely that any cable series on any cable station will ever have the impact TOS had.

SG is different than Trek so it's like comparing apples and oranges. SG doesn't intentionally try to explore socially relevant issues - however they do come up. It is IMO a lot more realistic (and less idealistic) - they argue about how to deal with alien threats etc. and officers aren't all squeaky clean and "aye captain"

SG also has humor which makes it enjoyable to watch. If you haven't watched SGA for the Sheppard/McKay banter you've missed a treat - those guys are a terrific duo. It will be interesting to see how the next SG1 cast works out.

The producers of SG seem genuinely interested in keeping the show fresh.

Yeah, I Gotta Say...I've Enjoyed SG-1 Far More Than I Enterprise.

The Conntinuity In SG-1 Is Pretty Good Too...Not Perfect, But Way Better Than Trek's....And It Still Doesn't Get In The Way Of Story Telling....

I'll vote no, but I do enjoy Stargate. The show basically is Star Trek without a star ship because there always seem to be episodes within the same vein. However, it is more militaristic (it is the only show on TV approved by the U.S. Air Force.

I don't think it can be the next Trek because it will never receive the level of exposure Star Trek has. I've only seen maybe 20 Stargate eps (all SG-1) and I don't think I've seen one with the same level of social commentary that is an underpinning of Star Trek. However, right now Stargate would have to be the hegemon of Sci-fi television. I've seen LOST but it seems more fantasy than Sci-fi (simply there does not seem to be much science).

I voted no because I think Stargate really sucks and I have tried very hard to like it.

Voted no only because the fanbase isn't as big as Trek (40 years and "708 hours "of eps spanning 5 series and 10 films!)against SG-1's 8 years and year 9 is in the works Delightful Major John Shepard/Doctor Daniel Jackson/Jack O'Neil.

:) :newyear::wow::congrats:

 :P :P :wow:

Also a Doctor Who Fan! ("saw the Live Action version of Thunderbirds")

No, Actually Showtime ruined stargate when they 1sr made a series, the writers who made the original movie, wanted to make a trilogy out of it, but whoever had the rights to stargate, sold the name and so on to Showtime, I enjoyed the original movie, but i diliked the series they have because of that fact

Did you ever watch the series? IMO it is better than the movie (**okay maybe I'm biased but Richard Dean Anderson or Kurt Russell - well RDA saves the day**) - and what's two movies compared to at least 11 seasons of television (sg1 & SGA combined). Besides the movie didn't have the box office it hoped for - if it had been a blockbuster things might have been different.

Since we're on a Star Gate topic - some of my favorite quotes:

Sheppard: Two heads are better than one

McKay: a common misconception

Teyla: If this had been a real fight....

Sheppard: If this had been a real fight I'd have shot you by now.

Sheppard: He's on my ship

McKay: Your ship....what? are you Captain Kirk?

Teal'c: Have you not read the Bible O'Neill?

O'Neill: I'm listening to it on tape - don't tell me how it ends.

Carter: You blow up one sun and everybody expects you to walk on water.

Jackson: I think they're a family

O'Neill: of what?

Jackson: I have no idea

Gateship One?

It's a ship...it goes through the gate.....

I Must Admit, Even Though I'm Huge Fan Of The Show, I Would Have Liked To Have Seen The 2 Sequels They Had Planned To Make.

Star Gate does not have as much room to expand as Star Trek (not that Star Wars did), I find it unlikely it will ever become as big as Star Trek; at lest for as long as Star Trek.

That's A Good Point. Which Is Why I Enjoy SG-1 More Than Atlantis. I Like ATL, But It Seems Too Much Like SG-1 In Another Setting.

not that Star Wars did

It Has Plenty Of Room To Expand

I would have loved to see more movies of it, there is a different feel to amovie then a TV Series, Better and Bigger Effects and usually something more dramatic would happen

I read the books that were based on treatments that the orginal people did. IMO, SG-1 is much better.

I voted no, but I do not think they are trying to be a replacement for Star Trek.

There are people who like Star Trek and dislike Stargate, people who like Stargate and dislike Star Trek, and people who like both.

I prefer just about all Star Trek to Stargate, but I also watch Stargate SG-1 reruns fairly regularly, and catch the current season, and Stargate Atlantis often.

I like 'Stargate SG1' and 'Atlantis', they're both good shows and maybe they will follow the same path as Star Trek did and establish a real Stargate franchise. However I don't think anything can and will replace Star Trek, it's been a phenomenon of huge proportions for decades.
