1. I don't know a whole lot about her other then the very public image that the world came to know, but I would say that her work near the end of her life against land mines should earn her some kind of positive mention.

Well Princess Anne had been working for charities for decades and never got the recognition Diana did for a relatively small amount of work that amounted to nothing more than a few shots for the cameras. Everything Diana did only attracted attention because she was pretty (not IMO though). She may have been a nice if unstable person but she doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same catagory as Churchill, Brunel, Shakespeare etc...

GWB should totally be in the list because he was the man who finally rid the world of Saddam Hussein and he'll have Bin Laden either dead or beaten soon enough. Plus Bush showed incredible leadership after September 11th.

I wouldn't put Clinton in the list though.

Dubya, for all the crap he takes, has definately shown he has the backbone to make tough calls that his predicessor didn't. He would be on a list of "Most Daring Presidents" if nothing else, and he should well be on this list.

  2. Typical, Canada's role is ignored (no offense to Mr. P). Canadians actually pushed in the furthest on D-Day (the only troops to meet their objective) and all the Canadians who died at Dieppe paved the way for this invasion.

I'm not trying to take anything thing from anyone, but the Canadians who died deserve as much credit as anyone.

All the people who fought and died deserve much praise.

    Don't forget about the Aussies.

    329208

Hmm..I was not aware the Aussies took part in WWII. Learn something new everyday. I assume it was mostly against Japan since it wouldn't really be feasible to bring Australian forces all the way to Europe.

    329210

Canadians and Aussies landed on Juno beach, as I recall. But the Aussies are more known for their role in the PTO (Pacific Theatre of Operations) since it is, litterally, their own back yard. Aussies were responsible for the safe recovery of hundreds, if not thousands, of downed US Naval Aviators, and they also helped in the battles of the Solomons (Including Guadalcanal), the Philipines, and on up the islands. June 6th, 1944 is the D-Day everyone remembers because of the size of it, and the effect it had, but against the Germans there were no less than 3 other D-Days (Operation Torch in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy.) plus countless D-Days in the Pacific during the Island Hopping campaigns, most notably, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima ( where this :( emoticon comes from, the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi on day 4 of the 36 day battle) Okinowa, Tarawa, and many others.

  4. These are the top 25 for people to vote for (according the program, which aired tonight):

Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, Neil Armstrong, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, Benjamin Franklin, Bill Gates, Billy Graham, Bob Hope, Thomas Jefferson, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Elvis Presley, Ronald Reagan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George Washington, Oprah Winfrey and the Wright Brothers.

imo considering the original 100, this top 25 could have been much worse, though it ignores musicians, writers, and artists completely.

    329058

Not quite. Elvis Presley was...a musician. Bob Hope---a comedian. and Walt Disney was a writer, and founder of Walt Disney Corporation, and we ALL know what that is.

  5. I would say that maybe certain entertainers could be on the list, but only if their contributions to the American arts have been significant enough. For Example, Steven Speilberg and Micheal Moore wouldn't be considered, because they make movies. But Thomas Edison, who was not only an inventor, but the original movie maker, INVENTED the Movies, so he would be considered.

  6. I'm going to agree with Takara, there are good and bad actors and actresses on both sides of the border. Unfortunatly, in the US to become successful, you need looks, and acting skills. Maybe somewhere else it's the other way around, but that's the way it seems here. The other thing to consider when discussing acting talent is, how well does the actor fit the role? Audie Murphy played himself extroardinarily well, but could he play President Kennedy? The secret to being a good actor is knowing what roles you are good for and what you aren't. I, personally, am a great actor for certain roles (I once played "Tom" in "The Glass Menagerie", a role that I could readily identify with) and some I can't do so well with. (For example, I would make a horrible Micheal Moore)

  7. I agree that Audie Murphy's service record alone qualifies him for the list - but as someone else pointed out - Americans don't know much about history and probably wouldn't know about Murphy's record if he hadn't been an actor as well.

James Stewart was also a veteran (WWII bomber pilot) and I don't categorically oppose all entertainers any more than all writers, musicians, athletes etc.  but I question the "greatness" of anyone who's sole accomplishment is to make money.

And, I've said this before, as regretable as the loss of Tillman's life is - the fact that he gave up lots of money to serve his country IMO makes him no more great than the little guy down the street who gave up his job at the gas station to die for his country.

Other people I think who "contributed" more to society than many people on the list:

    Clara Barton

    Philo Farnsworth

    Rachel Carson

    James Watson & Francis Crick

    Steven Hawking

    Whitney Young

    Elizabeth Blackwell

    John McCain

I think the emphasis on people living in the latter 20th century is a good indication people weren't thinking historically.

Americans are unfortunately rather blind when it comes to looking at History. And, to a certain extent, we are a pop culture kind of country. Who were the people on the Top 100 most Influential People of the year list? Paris Hilton was one of them. D'oh!

I would argue that Michael Moore has done nothing less than take full advantage of the bully pulpit.  Is he a great American, who knows?  I'm sure some of the people on the list have done no more than Michael Moore, they took advantage of the bully pulpit.  Are they great Anericans, once again who knows, opinions differ.  Which is all I mean, opinons differ.  Opinions are like rear ends every one has one.  Our definitions and criteria for great Americans is most likely vastly different, as are the opinions of the Discovery channel producers as well

    327939

I might consider letting him on the list if he had actually...I dunnow...DONE something about his views. Anyone can make a movie about their views. Anyone can chase Senators. Anyone can take news reel footage and edit it to their likings. He's done nothing that any 15 year old with a video camera, a microphone, and a VCR can't do. If he wanted to be known for something, he should have jumped at the opportunity to run for President in 2004.

    328057

Hmm, I wonder how the election would have turned out?

    328094

He would have lost in the Iowa Caucuses. He would have placed after Kerry, Edwards, Dean, and even Dan Rather and Elmo!

  9. I said it last year, and I will say it again, He's a great American hero. His courage is something we really don't see much of today, and maybe the last time we saw such courage was almost 4 years ago on 9/11. if all Americans were like him, we'd be living in the safest country in the world. But, he wouldn't be such a hero if everyone were like him. It's that kind of outstanding, distinctive courage that makes him a hero, and a special person.

  11. Ellen DeGeneres, Lucille Ball, Tom Cruise, Barbara Bush, John Edwards, Rush Limbaugh, Madonna, Dr. Phil, Michael Moore, Audie Murphy, Barack Obama, Arnie, Pat Tilman, Martha Stewart and Oprah Winfrey should not be included in the "Greatest Americans" list.

    327863

I'll agree with you on all but one: Audie Murphy. Yes, he was an actor in a movie. But, the charactor he portrayed in To Hell and Back was none other than himself, and that movie is pretty damned close to being realistic. Anyone who distinguishes himself that much in service to the United States (winning EVERY medal for courage and galantry the Army has to offer) definately does belong on the list. Pat Tillman, maybe, because of what he gave up to become a soldier, but if I had to choose one to put on the list, Audie Murphy would be it. and I will say that Micheal Moore should be banned from any list concerning "great Americans" Aside from being used as an example of what they are not.

  12.

    a waste of taxpayers Money

You don't understand them. One of their primary missions is as a Recruiting tool. They motivate young men and women to join the Navy, even if they won't neccisarilly become a Fighter Pilot. THat, and it is also an opportunity to show off to the American People what they are getting for their money when they shell out $100 million for a single F/A-18 Fighter.

  13. I do have a design for a Carrier, courtesy of Gary. I'll post the side view (with colors inverted so it's easier to see the hangar bays) and the banner for our task force. the ship is a Commandant class starship, and there are many starships around it in the banner for scale.
