  1. I was watching "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" last night, and I heard Bele say that he had been chasing Lokai for 50,000 years..... B)

I had to go back and listen to him a few times. That can't be right.

A humanoid species that lives longer than 50,000 years is absurd. Surely, they meant that he had been pursuing Lokai for 50,000 light-years. Had to be.

Anyway, despite the canonicity of the 50,000-plus year lifespan for Cheron natives,I just refuse to believe that what Bele actually said was accurate.

What do some of you think? Does a pursuit of 50,000 light-years seem more plausible than a pursuit of 50,000 actual years?

    :dude:

  2. Call me crazy, but I don't like Peter David's style of writing.

I know he's a huge comic book/sci-fi star. But he just doesn't do it for me.

I read the first few New Frontier novels. Thought they were okay for the most part. But I didn't continue with the series after book 3 or 4.

    :welcome:

  3. That's understandable.

I was never surprised to see Miranda's and even Excelsiors getting destroyed by the dozens in those big on-screen battles with the Dominion on DS9.

I'm not sure why I'm partial to little ships. I just am.

Prior to the Mary Rose I created several other ships for fictional stories and they have all been no larger than medium cruisers.

I guess its because a smaller ship with less firepower forces my commanders to really think they're way out of situations prior to committing to a fight.

I'd like to place the Mary Rose even further back in Trek history (maybe even as far back as "The Search for Spock"). In Jr High (late 80's) I wrote a whole slew of fan fiction set in that era. I recently found those old stories and re-read them. They're terrible, but I think I can re-write most of them.

  4. :welcome:

    Wow. That's big.

I've always been partial to smaller ships myself.

I changed the ship's name (I forgot there already was a USS Renegade).

Here's something extra I designed for it.

The Mary Rose was a 78-gun Royal Navy carrack in the 18th century. I lowered the registry, placing the ship in the early 2300s (maybe 2320), and I'll be changing the class name.

  5. I know.

That's why I said it would hold up well against all but the largest enemy vessels.

To be honest, I doubt it could trade punches with an Akira either.

Now that I think about it, the ship should have a lower registry than the one I've assigned it (in the 78*** neighborhood) and be placed somewhere in the early 24th century rather than the TNG timeframe.

I don't really know alot about what was occuring between the 2290s and 2340s, though.

I had designed it for a friend, but after finishing it decided to keep it. :welcome:

I've submitted it to the Journal of Applied Treknology. Hoping to get it listed by June.

This is a starship I created just this morning. It combines elements of the Miranda, Soyuz, Constellation, and Centaur classes. I intend for it to be a "heavy" Miranda-style battlecruiser. The weapons pod has 5 photon torpedo launchers. The pod is flanked by pulse phaser canons. The forward shuttlebay houses fighter craft, while the rear bays contain the more traditional auxiliary spacecraft. The ship also is equipped with augmented sensor capabilities. Add to that uprated hull armor and shielding (and excellent sublight maneuverability), and the "Renegade-Class" should hold its own against all but the largest vessels operated by the Federation's enemies.

The piece of equipment I forgot to label is an additional sensor-type module.

    What do you think?

P.S. I plan on using this ship at some time in the future, whenever I write some TNG-era fan fiction. Thought it might be fun to make myself the captain, and post some of my friends at the bridge stations. Maybe have a joint mission with the Enterprise-D or E. I haven't decided yet.

  7. Good points all.

In my buddy's fiction, it's sort of funny as the holographic barkeep is modeled after Lando Calrissian in Star Wars. He's even visualized as Billy Dee Williams. Like the EMH (and the doctors he was based on), the barkeep's program was based on hundreds of bartenders from across the Federation, including Guinan. He has some hilarious interactions with the crew. So, because of the actual people he's based on, he can simulate empathy, flirt with female crew, spot problems that may need to be reported to someone (like the ship's counselor). but I guess he really can't feel it.

But, I am starting to see where it's somewhat impractical to have a totally automated lounge.

  8. I was thinking about the lounges on Starfleet vessels.

Wouldn't it make more sense to nix the living lounge staff and replace them with holographic waiters, bar tenders, etc? Especially post-Dominion War/post-Voyager returning home, since holographic technology has adanced so rapidly.

One of my friends online writes his own fan fiction, and the ship he writes about (USS Cassini, Sabre Class) has a lounge staffed by holograms. When I read his latest short story, the holo-lounge just made sense to me and I started wondering why Starfleet wastes valuable resources on living staff (usually civilians) on starships when its no longer necessary.

    Anyhoo, just a thought.

  9. Hey, I've always thought the Jedi we're every bit as "bad" as the Sith (see my posts at starwarsfans.net :yahoo: ).

Obi Wan and Yoda tried to trick Luke into killing his father. Then when Vader blew the scam by spilling the beans on Luke's parentage, they were all "UH,...oh no, this is unfortunate.....you see, we didn't lie exactly,uh...what we said was true.....er, from a certain point of view."

    :P

And nobody can tell me Qwi Gon Jinn could not have also left tattooine with Shmi Skywalker. But he didn't want Anakin to have any greater influces than himself.

Years later, Obi Wan knew Shmi was in trouble (or at least that something very bad was going down on Tattooine, based on his padawan's nightmares), and he refused to let Anakin check it out, or even to tell Anakin that his dreams could mean something significant about his mother. He let Shmi die. Without remorse.

The Jedi are lying, word-twisting, self-righteous, insufferable sister kissers.

The Sith are evil, world destroying, self-righteous, power hungry wife chokers.

    They both suck.

My dislike of the Jedi does not mean I dislike the Rebellion, however. The Rebels were cool. Especially Lando and Han.

  10. Well, in the majority of my most recent fan fiction I have tended to prefer a more military-tone to Starfleet.

I didn't really like the almost contemptuous manner in which most Trek writers had characters (like Captain Picard) frown upon Starfleet's dual role as both a scientific and defensive agency. To an extint that loathing of Starfleet's military mission showed itself in some episodes of TNG as well, and maybe the other series too.

I always saw the 'Fleet's military role as just as heroic and honorable a service as exploration, to be honest.

I for one, wasn't surprised when the Dominion just annihilated the Federation's defenses in the opening weeks of the war on DS9.

I see no reason why a well rounded Starfleet crew can't take pride in being explorers and defenders of their homes. There's no shame in being a soldier.

  11. Absolutely!

My mother's father is Irish. My grandpa Harry. His grandparents immigrated to America around the time of the Civil War and settled down south. H's still alive (about 75 years old now, I think), but I haven't seen him in ages. He's living in a retirement community in Oklahoma now.

    :look:

  12. I have everyone except Nemesis.

I still havent seen Nemesis. I've had opportunities to buy the DVD, but I don't know....it just doesn't sound too interesting to me. I'd rather remember the TNG cast as they were at the end of Insurrection.

  13. I thought Hayes reason for leaving was pretty lame.

I dislike SP for all the reasons Hayes pointed out, but in all honesty, SP has been bashing religious people from day 1 and he just noticed it? :look:

He has other reasons, I'm sure. Maybe he thought they'd want to keep him so badly that they'd offer him more cash.

Anyhoo, that's my 2 cents. Oh! I found a website about scientoogy. It's linked below.
