I went to the movie today, and I loved it, even though some aspects I did not like. What I liked best about it was that it was at the level of the original series..not a lot of swearing, not a lot 'bareness.' But Kirk was still a talented rascal, Spock still struggling with who he was. As someone who watched the original series when it was on air, it felt like old times in many ways.
I don't expect to see rigidly followed 'canon' when I see anything that purports to be a prequel. Still I think they could do a better job with it if they wanted to. But the departures I see are not enough to make me dislike Enterprise or this film. I really, really enjoyed the latest Star Trek movie, and I, who rarely go to the theater, want to see it again so much that I will probably pay to see it a couple of more times. I rated it a 5.

I recently saw Enchanted again on DVD ( I had seen it a while ago at the $2.50 theater, which went out of business recently).
Most people have seen Disney's Snow White, and other such animated fairy tales, and if you can imagine Snow White converted into flesh and blood, and then transported to New York City, you've got the movie Enchanted.
Giselle is the hapless 'princess-to-be' transported to New York by her fiance's evil stepmother, the Queen. She is
'rescued' from her confused wanderings by the cynical Robert and his 5-year-old daughter. It's a funny film. I laughed all the way through.
Some favorite scenes: 1) Giselle decides to call for help from NY animals to clean up Robert's apartment, and so the animals that come include pigeons, rats, and cockroaches, instead of the cute little robins, bluebirds, sparrows, deer, rabbits, chipmunks that she lived with in the woods. Giselle observes 'Well, we have to make new friends," then
bursts into the 'happy working song' and they all clean up the apartment.
2)At one point the frustrated Robert declares "it's like you escaped from a Hallmark card!"
3) All the scenes with Giselle's loyal friend, the chipmunk Pip, and the queen's evil henchman are fun.
It's silly and fun, and of course, everyone except the evil queen lives happily ever after, though with different people than who they started with!

So has anyone gone to see Wall-E? I did and i thought it was a cute moveI ordered it recently in a hotel room during the evening. ( I was at a conference).
I agree that it was a cute little movie with a lot of laughs.

I have the back and white original on video, which I still watch from time to time. I don't know about the short story
from which the first version was made, but I liked the fact that the focus was on humanity, and whether or not man would learn to live in the interplanetary community, as well as among his fellow man.
The new version is unable to reconcile the human problems of the people with the alien's focus on the value of the planet, and not the people. Why should we focus on the little conflicts, for example between Jenifer Connelly's character and her stepson, when the 'important' question is the destruction of the environment?
I thought it strange that the little globes were gathering up samples of every kind of life on earth EXCEPT a sample of human beings.
Perhaps if the script were better written.....
I'll probably watch it again on DVD, but just for a second look at Gort, and those little locust-like machines that were destroying everything.

I saw the movie Billy Jack ages ago. It had the flavor of an anti-establishment film, but in the end he allowed himself to be arrested after he had meted out his own 'justice', which showed, in my opinion a respect for law and order. I think I am remembering it right. Billy Jack killed a bad guy that murdered an Indian and raped his girlfriend. I liked the movie back then. I'd have to see it again to see if still like it. I really liked the song 'One Tin Soldier.'

Stargate SG-1, before the Ori (which did not exist when the poll was set up ---- but they're here now!).

I voted yes, even though I personally would not choose to have one. I think it is a nice way for members to express themselves if they choose to do so in that manner.

I liked her best as Ambassador K'Eheylr, but she is an excellent character actress, and good in all the roles.

People believe the moon landing is a hoax in part because they themselves can't fathom the level of dedication and hard work that existed in this society at that time.
I currently work with students that I have to prod to study. They do not enjoy learning....they just want grades and a degree, and a job. They strangely do not connect learning to preparation for a future professional life as a citizen with
responsibilities to be informed within a democracy.
They often take shortcuts themselves. So to many of them it is easier to fake a moon landing than carry it out. So they believe people did what they would have done --faked it.
Somehow we have failed to pass along the valuable and necessary belief in the value and rewards of hard work. We have a growing culture of 'what is the least I have to do to get by', and that will never lead us to a future as successful as the era of the moon exploration.
I would also like to see what has happened to the old sites of the first moon landings.

This reminds me of the TOS episode ( The Enemy Within) where the transporter separated Kirk into a 'good' and an
'evil' Kirk. In the end he needed all aspects of himself, including those aspects regarded as negative, in order to be the good strong decisive leader that he was.
I agree with those who are suspicious about this sort of drug, especially with the fact that it may eventually interfere with us learning how to handle fear and traumatic situations.
Moderator comment: this thread is partly off-topic with discussion of the movie. please try to stay on topic.

I own the dvd now and have watched it.
But the first time I saw a portion of this movie was at church during communion. We have a very large church, and two large view screens in the front, facing different angles, behind the altar and the musicians. Someone allowed the playing of the scenes that alternated between the last supper, and his beating and dying on the cross during communion. Because the church is large, it took a while to distribute the wafer and grape juice for communion. The lights were lowered and the choir was a singing some appropriate song. I and many others sitting near me were crying and upset as we watched those scenes. It was not the usual meditation on Christ's death that one does during communion. Our pastors never did that again.
Also I think that those images from that film only focus on the severe PHYSICAL suffering of Christ. We knew and could now visualize the horrible suffering that Christ endured in His physical body. But when the sins of all humanity for all time were placed on the Lamb of God, when He became 'sin' to remove our sins from us......no movie can make us feel or know what our Lord actually endured in those moments. At best that we can hope to understand at last when we see him face to face.

Shocking! My mother and I just recently purchased four place settings of china from them for my niece who was married November 2008! I am going to e-mail her and let her know...I don't know if she received all the china she listed on her registry.

My nearly 50-year-old sister-in-law is the baby in a family of eighteen children. Their family reunions are huge! Her deceased parents had a long, healthy life, and they were a poor but happy clan. I think in those days the many children meant more laborers to help the family. It's not just how many mouths to feed; it's also how many laborers can bring in money. In the past you could stretch food if enough people were working to bring in money. My dad grew up in a family where he was the youngest of seven surviving children, and he used to talk about huge pots of beans, cabbage, and raising chickens in the back yard.
My brother and sister-in-law opted for just four children, and to my knowledge none of her siblings chose to have excessively large families. But they have fun when they all get together and have regular reunions.

I found it interesting that the scientist in the you tube video above pointed out that he was a theist, not an atheist. in particular he was a Roman catholic.
I enjoyed the episode because I enjoy some speculative aspect of sci fi. I liked the 'what if ' aspect. What if dinosaurs had evolved to an intelligence so great that they were able to go into space? I find most ' what if ' tales are on the fantastic side, but most sci fi is.
I think the fact that there was a religious based totalitarian regime that hindered science to be quite believable in light of history, but just because someone misuses power does not mean the truth will not win out in the end.

I look forward to seeing it. I even plan to go to the theater, which I rarely do. (thrice in 2008, once the year before)

3am? Most 4 yr olds are sound asleep. Why was the child awake, and how did he have the presence of mind to cross a highway and go to a store, and play at that time of the night? I think CPS was right to take the child from the parents, and investigate.

I am saddened to learn of her death, but I am glad the family was able to maintain their
privacy through that difficult time of her illness. She will be missed.

Not sure if this is the right sections but since I haven't made it yet, I thought it'd be cool. Anyway what I need is someone who wants to make a forum with me. The forum will be for comic book discussion. If you're interested or if you think you might join and want to hear more, you can reply here, PM me or email me. Thanks. There is a thread under 'Holodeck 1: 20th and 21st Century Entertainment' on Comic Books. Can't miss it..... it's the first 'In Stasis' topic listed listed. Go back to 'Promenade' and select 'Holodeck 1: 20th and 21st Century Entertainment' instead of 'Off Topic Discussions.'
See whether or not that is what you had in mind.

Well now, that's interesting. My 77 year old mother lives with me now, and
...ahem....well she passes a lot of gas.....but it is almost always odorless.
Could that be because she is on about four blood pressure medications, that is, if
this result also applies to humans?

I also do not celebrate Halloween due to my beliefs. My church is taking the children out roller skating, calling it a Hallelujah party, but no one is allowed to dress in costumes. I do not have to worry about trick or treaters because I live in a condo, our building front door is locked, and no one in our building has children. Though many do have grandchildren, they are usually with their parents on Halloween.

Why do you think Geordi make Lieutenant Commander in only 3 years but it took Worf 7 years to make the same rank?It took La Forge longer than 3 years to be promoted. He had been in Starfleet longer than Worf when TNG started.
According to st.com, La Forge graduated from the Academy in 2357 and was promoted to lieutenant commander in 2366 so he was in Starfleet for 9 years when promoted. Worf graduated from the Academy in 2361 and was promoted to lieutenant commander 10 years later in 2371 despite having disciplinary action noted in his file (when he killed Duras) and having resigned during the Klingon civil war.
La Forge and Riker actually graduated from the Academy the same year which shows how fast-tracked Riker's career was considering he was a commander while La Forge was still a lieutenant (jr grade) in season 1. It took Riker 5 years to make it to the rank of lieutenant commander and another 2 to be promoted to commander.
Thanks for the facts! This answers the question for me!

I'm impressed. I think it is wonderful to see her choose to vote, and be able to make a choice.

I agree. If he was accidentally hit by friendly fire and knew, the fact that his last act was to protect his fellow marines, and not resent what had happened to him, shows all the more that he deserved the Medal of Honor.

I just saw the movie again today,
It remains to be seen what has happened to Kirk's broter, who dies in the TOS series anyway.....
I love the film and it still feels like Star Trek to me. I was listening to the Spock we know talk to the
new Jim Kirk about the importance of friendship, and then later to the new Spock. In the last scenes,
I had the feeling that the friendship aspect of Star Trek was preserved amidst all the other changes.
I want to see it again, although I am spending too much money.
