1. I can't believe they said they didn't violate canon or continuity. Like the Borg. No humans along the normal time-line were supposed to meet the Borg until Picard did. And if they had been encountered, why wouldn't the description of the Borg be at least familiar to Picard? I mean, if Archer was supposed to become Federation President like In a Mirror, Darkly stated, then Archer's exploits would've been well-known to Starfleet officers.

  2. I read that Christopher Walken was originally cast as Willy Wonka.... I can only imagine what Burton was thinking "Hmm...let's scare the living bejeezus out of both kids and adults..Susan!  Get me Walken!"

Hmm... I'm not sure whether I'd be ecstatic or quivering in fear...

  3. Oh, I'm not saying that Depp's performance won't be good, I'm sure it will be. I just have a thing about the actors casted to play a role to look like the character should.

(In all honesty, I don't remember the book very well, so for all I know the original Wonka was way off kilter as well.)

  5. Don't get me wrong, I think Johnny Depp is a great actor. But I also think that some roles just weren't meant to be played by some people. And this Willy Wonka is one of them. I think that Johnny Depp was the wrong choice for the role of Willy Wonka. (I know, it's too late, the movie is about to be released... I don't care! It's been nagging me!!)

    For reference...

It just doesn't seem right to me.

  6. Lincoln's death actually hurt the reconciliation between North and South after the Civil War.  Under President Johnson's administration "reconstruction" was a punishment-oriented affair that helped divide the two even further, contributed to Southern illiteracy, poverty, and lack of opportunity that the South has only recently been able to recover from.

Had Lincoln lived, we would have seen a much gentler and easier melding of the Union and the Confederacy.  His assassination was the worst thing that could have happened to the South.

Now Gorkon, on the other hand, was also an agent of peace, yes, but more closely resembles a person like Mikhail Gorbachev or Boris Yeltsin.  Isn't the friction between the Klingons and the Federation supposed to represent the Cold War between the Soviets and the U.S.?  Or was that the Romulans? Hard to keep it straight sometimes.

    328136

Maybe, but most people don't really know that off the top of their head. So it's just as likely that many people would see the whole thing as a Cold War with a Civil War ending, or something along those lines.

  7. Did anyone watch this last night? It's a new series that comes on NBC Thursday nights at 9pm.

What it is is old bands come back to perform one more time and at the end, the audience votes and whoever wins, their charity gets $20,000.

It was great last night, they had the return of Loverboy, Flock of Seagulls, Tiffany, Arrested Developement.

It's an hour long show, the first 30 minutes they sing their famous song and the last 30 minutes they do a remake of a hit song that is famous now. It was great to see Flock of Seagulls back, the did their famous song "I Ran". Great stuff. Next week will be Tommy Twotone (I know I probably spelled the last name wrong), Vanilla Ice among others.

I can't wait to see Vanilla Ice do "Ice Ice Baby" again :assimilated:

    328576

I hadn't heard about it until just now, but that actually sounds pretty cool. I think I'd like to see it.

  10. I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

First of all CD's are relatively cheap to produce yet they sell them for ridiculously high prices.

Secondly, once you buy a CD, it should be yours to do with as you please. As long as you aren't doing it for profit, you should be able to upload the contents and share it with everyone else in the world if you so desire.

Thirdly, the musicians who produce and create that music often refer to themselves as "artists" and are usually the first ones to jump aboard the "anti-capitalist" bandwagon if they think it will bring them some publicity. So if they don't care about money, then they won't care if people exchange their music for free.

They can't have it both ways. They can't rant about how much they hate "big business" (even though their record companies are "big businesses") and yet complain when they lose money from people using various sites to exchange music files.

I don't have to pay everytime I look at a painting in the city art gallery.

I don't have to pay JK Rowling ever time I read a Harry Potter book over and over again.

Once I buy the CD, I should be able to share it with others for free.

Musicians should be happy that people are even bothering to download or listen to their music.

    328332

There actually are a few groups/artists who don't mind. My favorite band, the Cruxshadows, actually encourages their fans to share their songs online. These days, what better way to get more exposure?

  11. I am listening to the tv while I browse and I heard them talking about a family with 17 kids (the mother had them all in a 20 year span).  My first thought when I heard that someone would have surgery way before it got that far :assimilated:

No philosophical discussions of the moral impact of large familes please.  But how many kids could you physically manage to have and/or raise?  At this point in my life I occasionally babysit.  I love my little angels but I am very, very tired after chasing them around.  Two toddlers is about my limit.

In fact, talk about reality shows - eating worms is nothing compared to four pre-schoolers with diarrhea.

    328314

Probably as many as the person feels they can raise. I personally only want 2, 3 and the most. Preferably a boy and a girl.

  12. Here's another picture from Celestia....

    Borgworld.jpg

This one is a Borg world with a Borg moon. The small white dots around the moon are Borg cubes from a great distance.

  13. I don't know who's heard of Celestia (or even if there's already been a thread for it) but it's a really great program. It contains over 100,000 stars, each of which you can visit. Some of those stars have planets you can examine. And yes, all those stars and planets exist. So you can examine Alpha Centauri, then go and take a look at one of Jupiter's moons, and then go and check out asteroid Ida (that's the one with a moon called Dactyl). And you can take and save pictures of anything you wish. Here a picture of the Earth seen from close to the moon's surface.

(I used a spolier because the image is pretty large.)

If that's not enough, you can download extra objects to expand the Celestia universe, some real, some fictional. For instance... here's a couple more pictures, of a Constitution-class Starship in pursuit of a Klingon Bird of Prey.

    Pretty cool, in my opinion.

The best part of Celestia... it's completely free! :dude:

Here's a link to the Celestia home page. And you can download add-ons from this site.

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.
