  1. Science and Religion attempt to answer the same questions: Who are we, Why are we here, and what is our purpose. Some will accept one, and exclude the other, others will accept both, and some will say screw it all, and start worshipping George Carlin. I think Sisko tried to balance the two, and in the end, he became a god, as Rick Berman put it in the Season 7 Extras on the DVD.

  2. Anyone remember the last big comment he made before he got "Canned"? "If Brett Favre was our Quarterback, we'd be undefeated"...Which may mean that he'll be calling up Ol' Country Time to see if the Packers could use him. As much as I think Green Bay needs a good WR, Packers fans just won't deal with TO. He'd get run out of town.

  3. this is probably old news but I just heard about it now. The Iggles are going to suspend Terrible Owens for 4 games, then deactivate him for the remainder of the season. I guess being a major pain in the Tail Feathers to the coach and your fellow players wasn't such a grand idea, was it? A pity, too, I was looking forward to seeing someone put a real good hit on him at some point.

  4. I was watching EM:HE at the time...But, I agree with TUH and Jim, if the series is to continue, the winner would probably be the Democrat, not just because of the continuity with the previous administration's cast, but also because it's a Hollywood production, where Republican scriptwriters make up something like less than 10% of the population.

  5. What the heck did MACO stand for? Military Assault COmpany? I always looked at them as the forbearers of Starfleet's Marine Corps that we see in alot of sims now.

Edit: By the way, SEALs are cool, but (and I must admit, I am a bit biased as my brother was one) USMC Force Recon is cooler.

  6. Gary got me good the other day with this. He's a Brewers' fan, I'm a Sox Fan...when we were watching Game 5, during the 9th, he was sitting on the couch with his hands cupped around his neck. I told him "It's 6-3! The Angels have no chance!" he said "Hey, they still have plenty of time to choke, Babes" yeouch...

  7. the Army has a new 18/26 plan, 18 months active, 36 in reserves. The minimum Active Duty enlistment for the rest is 2 years, and for technical jobs it's between 4 and 6. If you go through ROTC or the Academies, though, it's a 5 year active commitment, plus between 4-6 in the Ready Reserve Force for all services. (Obviously, though, that's for the Officers)

  8. Don't know a whole lot about the RAAF, Manveru, but I wish you good luck anyways. Military Life, though, I suspect, doesn't change much from country to country. PM some of the Veterans on this site, I can give you a short list of those I know who were in. Not all were happy about their service, but their insights might be helpful

  9. Actually, I am on my way to chain myself to the sewing machine for the day -while I make costumes for some children.  There are four of them and they're doing the Wizard of Oz (thankfully they're buying the lion costume)

They still have trick or treat in my town but I never have anyone come by.  I have a relative who lives in a "nice" neighborhood and people drive from all over the county to bring their kids there - I've even seen police officers at the entrance to the subdivision because of all the crowds.

There is group that holds a a Halloween event at a local state park and the proceeds go to charity.  Some churches have Halloween parties - others use the terms fall festivals to disassociate from Halloween.  They have "trunk or treating" in my church parking lot - where people decorate the trunk of their car and have games (like go fish) and pass out candy - they have pony rides and a cake walk etc.  The kids get the trick or treating experience without the inherent dangers.

There is a large group of people who believe Halloween is Satanic and many churches refuse to do anything remotely related to Halloween - which makes it almost a controversial topic - which is also odd because I don't remember ever hearing anything like that until a few years ago. (just so some of you know I did have a "spirited" debate about the difference between Pagan and Satanic - I have since realized such discussions are pointless  :P and I just don't bring it up.

I am so old that I still remember getting homemade candied apples and rice crispy treats in my trick or treat bag as a child - and nobody had second thoughts about eating them.  Sometimes I miss the good old days (eeek, I'm turning into my mother)

What ever happened to those "Good Ol' Days", TUH? And why is it that as we get older, we start sounding like our mothers? Maybe for me it's the kids...

Now, Gary and I pick through the kids' candy and make sure nothing's been tampered with. I remember my parents doing it with a toothy smile...and then I'd be missing some of the candy I got...Sneaky parents...

  10. Okay, in one of the sims I am, in I am the XO of a multi-national fleet assigned to defeat a resurgent Dominion. Our orders are to get to the Founders' Homeworld, capture Odo, and have him convince the Founders to agree to surrender. the alternative option is taking Odo prisoner, and maybe a few younger founders, and then destroying the remainder of the Link. The problem comes in here: The Dominion is threatening more than 70 Billion people, and if unchecked, could kill alot of them. Would it be worth it to Sack the Founders' homeworld and kill probably 200,000 people, to save 70 Billion? And would you be able to give that order in a sim?

  11. Okay, so I was watching "The American President" On TV today, and I had an idea...

Why don't we have a mock election for the President of the United Federation of Planets? it would be an honorary title, with no real privelages, but it would also be interesting to see how it would play out here. Perhaps if we had enough candidates, we have a "Primary" to narrow it down to say...4 candidates, then those 4 candidates post their plans for the Federation. For example, how would a candidate manage Stafleet? how would they deal with the Federation's education system? stuff like that. Economics, Foriegn policy, Education, and the like. Perhaps we have the members nominate our members for the Primaries, then hold a Primary Election, say in 2 weeks, and leave it open for a week, then we give the official candidates time to do their policies and such, then hold the General Election. What do you guys think?

  12. Come hunting up here Jim! B) Elk are open (i believe) and there r lots!

    357421[/snapback]

He'd have to get a Canadian Hunting License to do that. And I don't know how favorably Customs would look upon a large white guy wearing a Black Cowboy hat driving a large truck and hauling a couple of Rifles...

I've always considered the term "Redneck" to be somewhat of a racial slur. Some people use it as a term of endearment to describe themselves or their family and friends but in most cases when someone uses the term to describe someone that they don't know it's used in a derogatory way and is in general used to depict an "ignorant, southern racist".

As far as slurs go I rank it up there with the "N word".

Good post, VBG. If someone called me a redneck because I listen to Country Music, and (Yes, I do do this) watch NASCAR and drink beer with the boys, I might understand it. But if someone calls me a redneck and means that I'm just an ignorant racist...well, there's gonna be some trouble...
