Digital Flags

Recommended Posts

I've been reading where the FCC has passed a regulation that all new digital recording equipment will have a "flag" - ie embedded code that makes them uncopyable.

It appears that those of us who use VCR's to "time shift" ie record to watch later have been placed on the endangered species list.

Here's and article that explains it:

This doesn't mean we won't be able to record.

By FCC fiat, any digital TV tuner built after July 1, 2005, must refuse to allow broadcast-flagged programs to be recorded in such a way that they can be redistributed in their high-definition format. You'll be able to record Letterman tonight and watch him tomorrow but you won't be able to e-mail a copy to your friends.

Even when this is enacted though I guarantee that someone will come up with a way to "remove" the flag. No matter what TPTB come up with there are tens of thousands of pirates and hackers out there that will work to defeat it. I don't expect anything to change.
