This is probably the best movie I have seen in a long time. It was based on the life of William Wilberforce, a Member of Parliament who lobbied against the slave trade and is credited for the Act abolishing it in England. I know movies "based on real events or people" take artistic license but I think there was enough truth there to be interesting.

I wondered why it was called Amazing Grace - but having seen it - that's a very appropriate name. It was interesting because most of what I read or watch about slavery takes place in the Americas. I can't say I really ever thought much about how the issue was addressed in England.

One of the most interesting lines in the movie though was when William Pitt said (I'm paraphrasing a bit) "in times of war opposition becomes sedition" - I think I've heard similar sentiment recently.

Ioan Gruffudds may get money and recognition for roles like "Reed Richards" but this is the kind of movie he was meant for - sadly this movie was not a major box office player. I realize some people prefer movies with a little more action and blowing stuff up. But this movie was IMO well done and interesting.
