After months of rumours and speculation, J.J. Abrams has committed to directing Star Trek XI.

The Hollywood Reporter published the news, stating this morning, "After months of speculation, J.J. Abrams has signed on to direct the next installment of the 'Star Trek' feature franchise." The trade paper also said that the film would revolve around James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock during their Starfleet Academy days and earliest missions in space.

Harve Bennett, the producer of most of the original Star Trek feature films, had had a Starfleet Academy proposal ready to go into production several years ago. He told the Trek Nation at the Farpoint convention last week that he did not believe Paramount would go ahead with a Starfleet Academy film without speaking to the people who originally brought them the proposal, and as of last weekend, he had not been consulted.

Abrams has repeatedly refused to comment on the screenplay for Star Trek XI, written by frequent collaborators Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The deal for Abrams to direct was reportedly completed on Friday evening, though his agents refused to comment.
