JJ Abrams Not Directing/No Damon or Cruise

Recommended Posts

While at the british convention SF Ball this weekend, Sci Fi Pulse webmaster and editor Ian Cullen found out interesting bits of information from Richard Arnold, former Personal Assistant to the late Gene Roddenberry.

Arnold revealed inside information about the upcoming Star Trek XI prequel at the convention, info that, if true, confirms and denies many of the recent rumours. Here are excerpts from Cullen's report.

"During a Q&A session which he held after he'd auctioned off a lot of Star Trek booty from his personal collection to help raise money for charity, Arnold spoke for about 5 minutes about some of the things which he has been hearing from his friends inside of the studio.

First and foremost Arnold told fans that the release date of the movie was going to be put back from a summer release date so as not to have it conflict with the 4th Indiana Jones movie. He revealed that the movie would most definitely get a release in the fall of 2008, probably November. He also confirmed the rumours that J.J. Abrams would not be able to direct the movie due to other commitments, however he added that Abrams has had more of a hand in writing the movie than we to this point have been led to believe.

As to casting, when I asked him about the rumours concerning Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and the more recent James McAvoy playing key roles, Arnold dismissed those casting rumours as total bunk. He did say that the studio has a big name in mind to take on the lead role in the movie. He said that it would not be Tom Cruise or Matt Damon.

Additionally Arnold revealed that Paramount's new management are upping the budget on the movie and it seems that the movie will cost twice as much as any of the previous Star Trek movies, which have been made to date."

This information is preliminary, of course, and entirely rumor.

I think the key point here is that Richard Arnold is the former personal assistant to Gene Roddenberry. This means that he has been out of the loop for a long, long time. He has no way of knowing any of this. Its pure speculation on his part.

Yeah, Trekmovie picked this one up too and debunked some points and called Arnold's accuracy into question (which based on the predictions he's made in the past: the 10th movie featuring the Voyager crew and saying there would be no series beyond Voyager).

Here's the article:

According to IGN, Star Trek XI producer J.J. Abrams is poised to direct The Dark Tower, based on the Stephen King novel series and will not direct the upcoming Star Trek prequel. Abrams' production company Bad Robot had "no comment" on the matter. According to the site sources, "an official announcement is forthcoming".

No information if Dark Tower will be a film project or a TV miniseries. But IGN now has reason to believe the project will be for the big-screen.

IGN sources also added that Abrams is indeed only producing Star Trek XI. As reported last week, Abrams would direct a secret Paramount horror movie titled Cloverfield. Might Cloverfield be a codename for The Dark Tower ? Stay tuned
