Stephen of Borg 2 Posted November 9, 2006 CLEVELAND (AP) -- Therapists at the Cleveland Hearing and Speech Center hope technology inspired by Star Trek can help teach patients to interact in everyday situations. Case Western Reserve University professor Stacy Williams got the idea from the reality simulator "holodeck" on Star Trek to create a simulator where people with speech disorders can practice what they've learned in therapy. So far the simulator features 180 degrees of video screens and is programed to walk patients through ordering at a fast food restaurant. Williams says it's situations like these where people with speech disablities often suffer, and the simulator can provide valuable practice.
