Theunicornhunter 2 Posted November 3, 2006 I read a lot of criticism by various members of just about everybody and everything; every headline is about someone screaming for their "rights" which usually translates into someone believing they have the right to take money away from other people - just because they run it through the tax coffers doesn't change what it is - sometimes I get tired of all the criticism and I just want to ask people - so what have you done to make the world better? Sadly I read a similar thread at another site and people were patting themselves on their collective backs for giving the free make-up they get to women's shelters or letting people in dduring traffic congestion. Now, letting people in is a good thing but that should just be routine - not a recognized act of "service" and not a substitute for genuine acts. While you may want to think about whether you do any good - you might rather talk here about people you have known that have done something worthwhile - someone that you admire. Several years ago I knew a couple who had adopted six children and at the time I moved were acting as foster parents for two other children. When I think of people I admire they always come to mind. Being a parent is difficult and time consuming and blending several sibling sets is particularly challenging - yet they put aside the quest for material wealth that people without children can afford - so several little children could grow up in a family. Coincidentally, I just read that this is national adoption month - here's to some real heroes.
ARMS 0 Posted November 3, 2006 All I can say for myself is, that my job is checking water from around the world is safe. I once saved a guy from bleeding to death using my Lifeguard training/First Aid/Biology knowledge, and I try to be helpful whenever I can. I can't think of any hero's I know though, at the moment. Kor37 9 Posted November 4, 2006 I give a group of homeless people work to do every Friday afternoon so that they can make a few bucks to make it through the week. Other than that, I guess I just try to be a good person.

Pretty tedious work that a lot of people don't want to do.

trekfan 0 Posted November 25, 2006 I let a homeless guy do some yard work for me. My husband pays him good and we even helped him to get a job at my husband's work. I try to help anybody I can out. I know I can't help everybody but it feels good to help someone.
LordOfTheBorg 1 Posted November 25, 2006 Well, seeing as there are no homeless people around here i can't do anything like that. In everyday life, i try to be a good person. If my friends were thinking of doing something stupid then usually i talk them out of it, especially if it could result in serious injury or jail time. Usually though, i don't go out of my way to do good deeds. If something is presented before me, i will do/help out, but other then that.
