You're the Admiral! - Sector AlphaIntroduction

Introduction

Welcome, gentlemen, to Sector Alpha, the first in the "You're the Admiral!" series at StarTrekFans.net. In case you're not familiar with the concept, the "You're the Admiral!" series is a series of semi-guided, hypothetical exercises in starship management, fleet strategy, and diplomacy. They are similar to role-playing games in that you will assume the role of a Rear Admiral in the Federation Starfleet, given authority over a sector of space with orders to demonstrate and enforce Federation policy as best you can. To do this, you'll be asked to first assemble, and then utilize, a fleet according to the circumstances. However, unlike an RPG, there is no interaction between the different players; this is simply an individual reaction to circumstances. The idea is to come up with different perspectives, goals, and methods to solve similar problems.

These scenarios were started on the Flare Sci-Fi Forums about a year and a half ago. "You're the Admiral!" was in turn inspired by the old "What Starship Would You Send?" threads on the r.a.s.t. newsgroup. With Mark's permission, I've started a spin-off series to conduct here on StarTrekFans.Net.

For each map, assume that:

-The sector is essentially flat, and is approximately 20 ly on a side. At Warp 9, a starship will take approximately five days to traverse a side.

-Each planet is in a star system, and except where noted is Class-M.

-The space in the adjoining sectors is essentially devoid of anything interesting or valuable. Borders extend in staight lines beyond that which is noted.

-Unless noted, all inhabited planets are occupied by humanoid species with a variety of bumpy heads.

Now, for some basic information about Sector Beta:

-Sector Beta was at one time a powerful Cardassian stronghold before the Domion War. They've completley pulled out.

-The unknown aliens (those in red) across the border were invaded by ther Cardassians during the Domion War, but pushed them back.

-The Kr'vete Imperium (those planets in orange) is a Federation ally.

-The Cardassians left an incomplete station, Lempock Nor, a Nor-class starbase 87% complete after they pulled out.

-The Big Red Nebla is useless.

-The Jakali Empire (those in grey) was once bigger.

-Reddington was devasteated by the unknown aliens

Basic Information:

-Jakali (Cass P with orbiting colonies; FJ-448 and Jimbali)

Population: 9.6 billion

Allignment: Ally

Government: Constitutinal Monachy

Technology: Mid-24th Century

Defense: 7 frgates (New Orleans equivelent), 4 cruisers (Akira-class), 2 pocket (light) battleships (Nebula equivlent), large commerical fleet, heavy orbital defenses

Notes: Plentiful natural respources

Unknown aliens

Population: 16.6 million (sector population)

Alignment: Neutral

Government: Dictatorship

Technology: current

Defense: 4 pocket battleships (Ambassador eqvuivlent), 16 frigates (Norway equvilent), high orbital defenses

Notes: low natural resources

Question One

A) Define what Starfleet's priorities in this sector should be. Describe the political position of the Jakali at this point in time, along with that of the aliens. Also, note any gaps in the information provided and where you'd want to focus your intelligence-gathering.

 Will you refit Lempok Nor, or a new starbase. If you chose the last, based on your answer to (A), choose a location to place a space-based Starbase to operate from. Assume that the Starbase will be able to defend itself from most threats, and will carry with it a very visible Federation presence regardless of where it is placed. It can be placed in orbit of a planet, in orbit of a star, or in the middle of space. Think Starbase 375.

C) Starfleet will alocate you NO MORE THAN EIGHT starships.

-There can be only ONE larg (Galaxy, Ambassador, Sovereign, etc.) starships in your fleet.

-There must be at least TWO non-combat ship in the fleet (science, transport, etc.). Justify its and your other ships presence and use.

(Sorry about the crappy map, adn it'll be tommorow or maybe later today)

Well I would say that StarFleet's first priority in this area is to...

Secure the area

Gain more information about the unknown aliens

Secure Lempock Nor

As for the Jakali I think they might be looking to take more of a powerful role in this are, by which I mean that they could be looking to exspand by means of conquest.

My intelligence-gathering would be focused on the unknown aliens as they may pose a threat to us and other races in the sector.

Refitting Lempock Nor would be great option but some of the other aliens may what to stake clam to it.

As for the ships I would request, I would take...

Sovereign class for main offence and defense

Non combat Engineering class of some kind for repair and construction

Non combat Sicence class for study or the sector

Three Akira class for patrol and attack/defence support

Two Defiant class for escort of Non combat ships

In conclusion I would keep an eye on the Unknown aliens and the Jakali, the Unknown aliens may attack Kr'vete Imperium to gain it's "Plentiful natural resources" this could prove to be a problem in the future.

This game sounds quite good, I love strategy games.

I'm going to play too:

A) Well Starfleet's priority should be to keep the unknown aliens from attacking the kr'vete Imperium for its natural resources. Also, I, as admiral, should find spost for colonists to settle on. Starfleet should also step up intellegince reports about the unknown aliens.

 Starfleet should upgrade and build Lempock Nor.

C) SHIPS

USS Crusader, Soveriegn-class NCC-75630

The USS Crusader's primary mission will be defense Reddington. Its secondary role will that of an enhanced deternt explorer.

USS Sulu, New Orleans-class NCC-67038

USS Union, New Orleans-class NCC-70003

The USS Sulu will be deployed to Jakali as defense, while the USS Union to Jimbali for defense there. Both of their secondary missions will be to patrol the border.

USS Graf Zepplin, akira-class NCC-68403

The USS Graf Zepplin will be a fighter and shuttle carrier for Sector Alpha's fighters. It will be deployed to the border.

USS Deterence, Defiant-class NCC-73548

USS Indeference, Defiant-class NCC-74696

The USS Deterence will be deployed along the border to patrol there. The USS Inderence will be deployed to Quintel to defend there.

USS Montgomery, Nova-class NCC-73407

The USS Montgomery will roam the sector examing sysyems for the perefect place for colonies.

USS Rome, Sysdney II-class NCC-4632-B

The USS Rome is an uprated Sydney-class transport. It will act a colony transport, troop transport, freighter, and medical ship. It will have no real postiton.

Quetion Two

A) OBJECTIVELY CRITIQUE one of the other answers to question one. Point out what you believe are the strengths and/or weaknesses in how the answer differs from yours. You may critique another answer, which has already been critiqued.

 Starfleet has approved your request for ships to be deployed to Sector Alpha as a permanent task force. But at the last minute, a change is made. An old Miranda-class destroyer, crewed by Academy cadets, arrives with your fleet. How will you use this new ship?

C) Because of Sector Alpha's position along two of the most important spacelanesto help the Cardassians, Starfleet decided to construct a shipyard in your Sector. They have narrowed it down to four, and below are the five planets and information:

-DD-56

Star type: black dwarf

Planets: thousands of type-D planetoids and asteroids, one class-A Geothermal planet and two super giants at the fringes of the system

-AE-845

Star type: yellow main sequence, one white dwarf

Planets: 2 Class B Geomorteus, asteroid belt, one class-o planet, two class-N Reducing planets, and one class-M planet

-Reddington

Star type: white main sequence

Planets: two class-C planets, one class-N planet, one class-M planet, asteroids belt, and three gas giants

-GD-342

Star Type: Orange dwarf

Planets: two class-G planets, one class-H, and massive asteroid belt

D) Starfleet wants you to draw up plans in case of an Impa (the unknown aliens). Below are the maps of the possible invasion routes. Draw up contingency plans. Impa ships usually operate in packs in groups of seven-eight frigates and one or two battleships. Attack planone is in red and attack plane two is in dark red.

E) Create a scenario like the ones above. You will not answer it.

Okay - it's taken me a while to do Question One. Here is my response - then I will read everyone elses for a different perspective. Do discuss with one another or just move on to the next question.

A. Other data – better map – did not have color codes & relied on descriptions – how to distinguish inhabited versus non-inhabited planets.

Nebula – how valid is determination it is useless?

What types of radiation are present – could unknown species survive inside beyond detection and organize attack on Jakali.

The situation I see is a diagonal band of Federation space between two sections of unknown space and alien populations.

Jakali appears to be in an adequate position to protect it’s natural resources. However, it’s possession of resources and it chemical base would make it a target for the unknown aliens who have limited natural resources.

B. I would refit Lempok Nor and I would place it in a central location between Reddington, Tykes and Kr’vete. This would place it near the less protected end of the diagonal band of federation space and provide a location to monitor any alien traffic across this section of federation space.

C. The Fleet

a. Goals – protect current Federation territories; initiate first contact with unknown worlds

b. Ships

i. A Galaxy Class to be assigned to initiate contact with the unknown worlds. One issue would be to initiate trade agreements with Federation planets high in resources to reduce threat of war to access resources.

ii. An Intrepid class to fulfill the same mission on other side of the sector – if there are no inhabited planets in this area then this ship would replace the science research vessel and research uninhabited planets at the same time monitoring border in rare event in invasion from outside of the sector

iii. A Defiant class to patrol – monitor the border with the unknown aliens. A working cloak if possible.

iv. A science ship for additional research on the nebula and then on uninhabited planets on Federation side of border. (see ii above)

v. Two transport ships to carry supplies from Jakali to other federation planets and alien worlds when trade agreements are arranged.

vi. Two runabouts stationed at Lempok Nor

I think bionicx raised a good point about other aliens having claim on Lempok Nor, I also think where it was currently located would have an impact - if it was in Federation space then it would be easier to claim.

I think I was hindered by not knowing if all planets were inhabited or just the ones with a square around them. This would affect my plan.

For example it would not be necessary under my location of Lempok Nor to spend additional resources defending Quintel if the other planets in the section are uninhabited. There is the possibility of alien attack circling outer boundary of Kr'vete and attacking from that direction - so extensive longe range monitoring would need to be done in the Kr'vete section

I think one difference between my analyses and the others is that I wanted to contact the alien races and open trade to pre-empt battles over resources while others invested more into defense.

Someone also raised the possibility of Jakali expanding by conquest. My understanding is they would lose their federation status if they did that.

I also relied more on some of the planets own defense capabilities where others did not address suppy transports between the federation worlds. I think I would change my request for two transports and a science vessel to one transport and two Intrepid class. I was also the only one to request runabouts but I think at least one would be necessary.
