Ferengi Creator/ TNG Writer Herbert Wright Died

Recommended Posts

Writer/producer Herbert J. Wright, who helped bring STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION to life in 1987 and was responsible for the creation of the Ferengi, passed away on Wednesday, August 24, of natural causes, according to StarTrek.com. He was 58.

Wright served as a writer and producer during TNG's first season and contributed his most significant contribution to the STAR TREK franchise with his creation of the Ferengi race, first seen in the episode "The Last Outpost". Wright also wrote the follow-up episode "The Battle" and helped contribute to the first Klingon-based episode of the series, "Heart of Glory".

Wright departed TNG after the series' first season to work on Paramount's TV version of WAR OF THE WORLDS but later returned as a producer for TNG's fifth season, in which he co-wrote the episode "Power Play". He also served as a producer on the popular 1970's TV series THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, as well as ROD SERLING'S NIGHT GALLERY, STINGRAY, HUNTER, and SPACE RANGERS, among others.

Wright's association with Gene Roddenberry dates back to 1973, with the development of THE QUESTOR TAPES as a potential TV series for Universal. Following the pilot's development, Universal turned down the proposal to develop QUESTOR into a weekly series, but Wright never gave up on QUESTOR. In 2003 Wright announced at the Grand Slam convention his intention to revive QUESTOR, with the Roddenberry family's blessing, and had begun to put together financial and distribution deals. Within a year, Wright fell ill, and the project was put on hold. At the time of his death, Wright's business and creative partners were in talks to move forward with QUESTOR.

"Herb was one of the good guys," Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry said of Wright. "I was very impressed that when he wanted to do QUESTOR, he would come to the conventions and talk to the fans, and find out what they wanted and what they thought. He wanted to do the right thing with the Roddenberry name."

Wright is survived by his wife, Elaine Giftos Wright, a brother, two sisters, a daughter from a previous marriage, and three grandchildren. A private funeral was recently held, but a memorial service is currently being planned for later this month.
