Pioneer Day - July 24th

It's a state holiday in Utah (only place I've ever lived with a paid state holiday) - when I lived there it was actually a larger celebration than some Federal holidays. I was actually surprised to see it listed on some holiday origins pages. Here's some background:

And yes, it is celebrated outside of Utah. They're having a barbecue, rodeo type event today.

 

Like many celebrations it is easy to forget the events behind the party.

It is a Mormon (LDS church) thing. They celebrate it in most parts of Utah and Idaho. Though it has toned down in Idaho alot over the past years.
