I believe "Wagon Train to the Stars" was just a nickname for Star Trek

You are correct - from the day it first aired it has been known as Star Trek; "wagon train to the stars" was the analogy Roddenberry used to sell his show to the network

"Wagon train to the stars" was a phrase coined by Gene Rodenberry while pitching Star Trek to the television networks. The reason he used that phrase is because in the late 60's, most of the successful television series on the air were westerns-the most popular being Wagon Train.

Yeah I think it really was just an analogy like others have stated.

Roddenberry modeled and thought of ST as “wagon train to the stars.”

Like when he was thinking of people to play on TNG he thought of the characters in “Gun Smoke.” It just shows how he always thought of ST parallel (to certain aspects - not all) to western shows.

In case there's still doubt. I remember when Star Trek first aired. I vaguely rmemember the image on the adds that had Wm Shatner in lower right corner. Dang, I was hooked before it even started.
