mrskirk 0 Posted June 28, 2003 "Wagon train to the stars" was a phrase coined by Gene Rodenberry while pitching Star Trek to the television networks. The reason he used that phrase is because in the late 60's, most of the successful television series on the air were westerns-the most popular being Wagon Train. removed 0 Posted June 28, 2003 i also heard that a name idea for star trek was 'gulliver's travels'. because it resembled, well, gulliver's travels. lol
master_q 0 Posted June 28, 2003 Yeah I think it really was just an analogy like others have stated. Roddenberry modeled and thought of ST as “wagon train to the stars.” Like when he was thinking of people to play on TNG he thought of the characters in “Gun Smoke.” It just shows how he always thought of ST parallel (to certain aspects - not all) to western shows. NordicBearskin 0 Posted June 29, 2003 :) That would have been a cool name for the show though...Although I wonder what we fans would have been called, 'Waggers' or 'Trainees'?
Theunicornhunter 2 Posted June 29, 2003 In case there's still doubt. I remember when Star Trek first aired. I vaguely rmemember the image on the adds that had Wm Shatner in lower right corner. Dang, I was hooked before it even started.
