Matt 0 Posted June 9, 2005 I just found out that Jeffrey Combs, the actor who played Shran, Brunt, Wayoun etc., originally auditioned for the part of Riker in TNG. I found this quite strange. Just wondering what others thought of this and if any of ye know of any other examples like this.
VaBeachGuy 12 Posted June 9, 2005 Yes, Jeffrey Combs is a very versatile actor. He's played on DS9, Voyager and Enterprise playing at least 5 different alien races (and playing all of them well).
Matt 0 Posted June 9, 2005 (edited) True. "Along with Randy Oglesby he is one of only two actors to play seven different characters on 'Star Trek.' Along with Brian Markinson, he is one of only two people to play two different characters in a single episode of 'Star Trek.'" Takara_Soong 4 Posted June 10, 2005 Vaughn Armstrong, who holds the record for playing the most characters on Trek, also auditioned for the part of Riker. Click For Spoiler He has appeared on Star Trek 28 times, as 12 different characters of 8 different races - Cardassian, Vidiian, Hirogen, Romulan, Klingons, a former Borg drone, Kreetassan, and Human. Commander Korris, Heart of Glory (TNG) Gul Danar, Past Prologue (DS9) Telek R'Mor, Eye of the Needle (VOY) Seskal, When It Rains..., The Dogs of War (DS9) Lansor/Two of Nine, Survival Instinct (VOY) Vidiian Captain, Fury (VOY) Alpha-Hirogen, Flesh and Blood: Part 1 (VOY) Korath, Endgame: Part 1 (VOY) Admiral Maxwell Forrest, numerous episodes (ENT) Klingon Captain, Sleeping Dogs (ENT)* Kreetassan Captain, Vox Sola, A Night in Sickbay (ENT) Captain Maximilian Forrest, In A Mirror Darkly, Part 1 (ENT) *Interesting story: On the Enterprise season 1 DVDs there is a special feature on Vaughn Armstrong. He indicated that when he was asked to play the Klingon captain in this episode it was to replace another actor who backed out. He had 3 days to learn the dialogue for the part, most of which was in Klingon.
Spike The Trill 0 Posted June 10, 2005 I wonder how he would have done as Riker? Did anyone see him on The 4400 this week?

Matt 0 Posted June 10, 2005 So he has a regular part, or was it just a guest appearance?
gul_nodrog 2 Posted June 10, 2005 I saw that interview where he talked about auditioning for Riker. Combs even said that he was obviously wrong for the part and didn't even know why they wanted him to read for it. I think that would have been strange, but I'm sure we would have liked him. Ace 0 Posted June 11, 2005 So he has a regular part, or was it just a guest appearance? 330066[/snapback] It was a guest spot, but his character seems integral to the plot of the show. I'm pretty sure he'll be in more episodes.
