Gary Phaserman 0 Posted May 13, 2005 Right now Jim is upstairs watching FNC crying like a baby. the Pentagon has released the list of bases recommended for closure and one of them is very near and dear to his heart: Naval Submarine Base at Groton, Conn. where he trained to be on a Submarine. Other bases include Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, and a Naval Air Station near Atlanta. in all, 33 major installations and 100 smaller bases, including dozens of reserve and National Gaurd posts, are on the list. More to come when I hear more.

Madame Butterfly 0 Posted May 13, 2005 (edited) I'm very surprised to hear about New London. My brother was stationed there for four years, and he said that the Naval community there was very strong and supportive. A lot of pride in what they do there. It was his favorite posting. Although it does seem that a majority of the bases are "reserve" bases. Edited May 13, 2005 by Madame Butterfly

trekz 7 Posted May 13, 2005 As bad as the base closings are, some of the reallignments are also going to have major impact in local communities. At the Rock Island Arsenal, on Arsenal Island, on Iowa- Illinois border, they are talking about a loss of 1400 civilian jobs. The Arsenal is the largest emplyer in the Quad Cities which includes the metropolitan area around Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline and Rock Island, Illinois. The loss of that many jobs, and the decreased purchasing power and loss of sales for local businesses will have a very negative effect on the economy there. Closures and reallignment in smaller communities will be devastating to their local economies. The arsenal has been busier recently doing more armor production. Data 0 Posted May 13, 2005 After all the crap with extending tours in Iraq, I think this sucks. They should cut back costs where it can be cut back. The overhead taken by the guys who actually make the big bucks.

And the Wisconsin Air National Gaurd is NOT AT ALL happy about the reserve center at Gen. Mitchell being shut down. the 440th Airlift Wing will be sorely missed up there.
