Phantom Of the Opera

Recommended Posts

I just got the movie version of The Phantom Of The Opera yesterday evening. I was hesitant at first to give any opinion of it prior to actually watching it... I refused to just go by movie trailers/previews.

Mainly why I did, is amongst all my other favorite music styles to listen to is Broadway/Showtunes... and Phantom of the Opera has always been one of my absolute favorite to listen to(and attempt, lol, to sing along with... I personally do not think I can sing anything close to an opera range. But adore the songs nonetheless), along with Cats and Les Miserables.

I completely adored this film!! The sets, soundtrack, costumes....everything was awesome! The girl who portrays/sings the part of Christine Daae, was amazing (definately outsings Sarah Brightman). And the Phantom was equally well portrayed. Raoul, was much better.. I personally am not much of a Michael Ball fan, so this gentleman who portrayed the character was a welcome sight as well as welcome on the ears. And Minnie Driver was a scream as the Diva, Carlotta.

I am glad someone adored it as much as i did.

Rewind to a year ago.I was a Phantom hater.A big one. Go ahead yell at me, i deserve it. My freind Cole was waitin for the movie and i just laughed at her. i thought the story of an obsessive maniac who lived in a sewer with some rats (yes thats how i thought the story was) it reminded me of Charmed. I then listened to some of the music. and I LOATHED MICHEAL CRAWFORD

Fast foward to December 2004. I watch the movie. CRY LIKE A (I'm trying to say a bad word but can't) and appalogize to my dear freind. I cannot say enough good things. Even 9 times later( thats how much i saw it)

Remember your first time,...

I saw it on Broadway >APPLAUD HUGH PANARO AND THE GUY WHO PLAYED RAOUL

This is the best show out there, ever. The staging, the songs, the costumes .The movie captures that imensly! I loved the contrast and the similarites

You are talking to a Phantastic Phantomanic. This week i am going to get the ring she wore from Sworski and a GIANT poster for my room

and a black Bed canopy

and purple satin sheets

Did i mention Gerald Butler..OMG HE IS HOTTER THAN ANYTHING

Emmy Roussam played Christine in the movie FYI

SO YAH PHANTOM THE SHOW AND MOVIE

We had out a load of Phantom DVD's starting on Tuesday. By Wednesday at about 4 PM, sold out. Put out another shipment on Thursday, by 3 PM today, sold out of the widescreen edition and were on the verge of selling out of the fullscreen. I may rent it to see how good it is.

Man, that movie bored me to death. What is up with that movie? I took it off and put Moulin Rouge on instead.

Moulin Rouge is faster paced, that may be why you preferred it.

Actually I like Moulin Rouge as well, but much prefer the Phantom.

@ tinadoll, thank you for the info on Emmy Roussam. And yeah, I cannot say how much I loved this film! I had the soundtrack when I was younger, I cannot remember if it was Broadway or London based cast.. but I played that tape so much it broke. And the CD we had gotten a couple years later only had highlights of the musical. I more than likely will get the movie soundtrack.

ach You can have your Moulin Rouge (*kicks Ewan Mcgregor in the pants for dissing Star Wars*)

@ Ms Soong: might be either if its with Micheal Crawford and Sarah Brightman. Though they are great individuals, neither have the voices for those roles. Sarashs voice is too opertic and high. Micheal too silly and less threatning.

On the other hand since then there have been several great Phantoms and Christines

I can't name them all i'm not that deep of a Phan...

I currently have the super extended versions of the Sountrack and the Movie. (with all the extra stuff YAH)

I know that some may not care for him in the role, but hearing Antonio Banderas... he did not make too bad of a Phantom (I believe it was on the Celebrations VHS I had, which was this tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber). And also on the collection, Hey, Mr. Producer.. the woman portraying Christine in that was very good, as well as Colm Wilkerson as the Phantom. He is also is one of the best variations of Valjean in Les Mis that I have ever heard.

And yes, I cannot help but agree with your opinions on Michael Ball and Sarah Brightman.

LOL, in the case of Moulin Rouge... it was good, IMO. But personally, I liked the music better when it was the marching band show for my old High School. It was the show that was done for my little brother's graduating year(2003-2004). It turned out very well. (I had graduated there in 1998 and EmilSoong graduated there in 2000... only Emil and my brother were in the marching band, I did not begin to play an instrument until after I graduated. Well.. my sister's husband was in the marching band his freshman year too)

I've never cared for Moulin Rouge, didn't like how they put modern rock/pop songs into a movie to help tell the story. It didn't go over well with me, I don't hate it, it's just not my cup of Earl Grey tea. When they started singing the lyrics to the Nirvana song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", it made me wonder if Kurt was spinning in his grave because of this.

But on the other hand, I have been wanting to see Phantom of the Opera for a long time. I haven't had a chance to get the DVD yet, but I want to. I love 80's rock/new wave so I know I'd like this movie since they put a little of that into the film. My mom has been a "Phantom" fan ever since the 1980's, but I really want to see it now.

I'm a guy that LOVES musicals. West Side Story and the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors are probably my two favorite muscials.

I saw Phantom at a dinner theater once and I thought the songs were horrible. Perhaps the movie is better.

How does Chicago relate to Phantom of the Opera? Is it more like Phantom or more like Moulin Rouge?

Chigago is a musical (Musical numbers that help the plot but there is dialouge)

Phantom is an Operetta. Musical numbers are the diaglouge and there is little stright talking

Moulin Rouge just sucks. Sorry. I hate Ewan Mcgregor.. But i like Nicole.don't get me wrong

Phantom is pretty much like its stage variation.. not too much per se into 80's rock/new wave. But it is definately something that can be easy to get into.

I like a ton of different styles of music... but musicals are way up there on my list.

Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar, and West Side Story are all big favorites of mine. I like a ton more too. I just watched Hey Mr. Producer yesterday!!! I love that show!!!! If you all like musicals, you should try and check this one out! You got some pretty big names in theater in it (Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Michael Ball (though I continue to gag at that one, but that is again IMO), Colm Wilkerson, to name a few), plus a couple of film stars too. Like, Hugh Jackman and Dame Judy Dench.

This is actually the whole production, some of them were not in the video/DVD but still a ton of it was there :waaaa:
