Pre-Live Chat Room Trivia:

Yes, once again pull out a piece of paper and a writing utensil because it is time for Master Q's Pre-Live Triviaaaa!!

 

Just before session #32 starts (4PM EST) send me a private-chat message letting me know that you think you have the solution. I'll then take a note of that and ask you to send me a PM on the message board where you will send me your answer within a max-time of 45 minutes after the live trivia session officially ends (when the answer to Q40 is given).

 

The first & second participants that get it right will receive four official trivia points

Goal: Make a magic square!

 

Instructions:

• Have each row, column, and the two main diagonals sum equal 34. (That is called the magic-square constant.)

• 1; 2; 3; 4; 5; 6; 7; 8; 9; 10; 11; 12; 13; 14; 15; 16 are the restricted numbers that you can use. Only use those numbers once, but you must use all. So what you are doing in a nutshell is rearranging the number square I put in this post.

 

After some planning; guessing; checking; and some logic you'll get it! Good luck with it. :)

Ladies and Gentlemen:

 

I will host this live chat room Star Trek trivia session today at 4PM EST. I hope all of you will be able to make it. It should be fun.

 

Until then, I need to go to the store and one other place, but I will be back and ready to go at four o'clock in the chat room -sub room called "Trivia."

It looks like we have some technical difficulties!

 

The chat room will not let me login. The chat room says to; "Encourage your chat operator to upgrade this chat room."

 

Is everyone else getting that message?

 

Hopefully VBG will be here to fix this or we might have to consider other options...

 

I really do not want to delay this. We could setup a temporary chat room...I don't know... We will see.

As I am sure all of you know, I do not have the full transcript of the session, and because of that I can't give an exact count of how many points everyone made.

 

I have Q11 to Q40, though. Would you guys like me to count how many points everyone made in those questions, and then add four points for everyone to that? Would that work with all of you?

Hi Spockstellaiter: Again, there are numerous different ways & varying methods someone could try on a problem like this. I am sure there are a lot of shortcut-tricks that do not require the use of algorithms and things of that nature. (I do not believe there is a generalized algorithm for even-ordered normal magic squares, however.) Well, let us keep the method of "KISS" alive here. ("Keep It Simple Stupid.")

 

It is fully possible to do some guessing and some checking. You just have to logically think out the math and what will happen when you arrange the numbers little by little.

 

Write the consecutive numbers in the boxes starting with one and then moving from there in a diagonal that slopes upward to the right. When you reach the top row, write the next number in the lowest cell of the bottom row of the next column on the right. Next, when you reach the right-hand column, write the next number in the left-hand column as if it immediately succeeded the right-hand column. When you reach a cell that is already filled, or when you reach the right-hand upper cell, write the next number in the cell directly below the last number written.

 

One other easy-to-follow shortcut for a 4 x 4 is to make the magic square with boxes representing each number, and then one row at a time, left to right, top to bottom, count from one to 16. As you count, label all the numbers consecutively, and then take note of the two main diagonals (the sums equal the magic-square constant). The numbers of the diagonals which are symmetrically positioned relative to the center should be then interchanged. You then have a four by four normal magic square!

 

Only problem I have with that, is that it makes people do this problem passively without diving a little deeper into the concepts. You can search on the Internet for the LUX method. (Hopefully that is the right one, if I remember correctly.)

 

 

I'll be here on Saturday, hosting a session exclusively for newbies. (I hope to see some there. ----LOL) Session #33 will be a week from tomorrow (Sat.) at 4:00PM EST. Reminds me.......I better check out the chat room to see if it is fully operational............ Looks alright :P
