Theunicornhunter 2 Posted February 7, 2005 This really relates to last Friday's Stargate Atlantis episode. I was just curious if anyone is either in law enforcement or in the military and knows what the standing procedure is for handling someone who breaks a level four quarantine? Thanks
Angela 1 Posted February 7, 2005 Wouldn't that be like shoot them if they make themselves a danger to the uninfected populace or isolate them before they get the chance to?
Odie 0 Posted February 7, 2005 I really don't no about that one. I have never have been trained or have to deal with quarantine situtations. I will go on what I do know. The quarantine is a lawful order, and since the person is broke the order they would voliated the UMCJ (Uniformed Code of Military Justice).
Jim Phaserman 0 Posted February 9, 2005 I guess it depends...I mean, are we talking about someone with Smallpox? what's the situation? If they are a threat to hundreds or thousands of people, I can see the gaurds being given a shoot-on-sight order...it really depends. and again, I, like Odie, am not trained for that sort of situation. I shoot guns, I don't quarantine people.
Theunicornhunter 2 Posted February 9, 2005 From what I understand a level four quarantine is as bad as it gets - Ebola would be level four. The question in SGA was that there was a level four quarantine and one of the scientists bolted. The military officer wanted to send someone to stop him. The civilian commander wanted to "negotiate" him down. The debate was which one was right? So I was curious how in real life security personnel are trained to handle this. I know how tv and movies depict it - if you remember the movie Outbreak the government was going to nuke the whole town but that was Hollywood.
joeybear 0 Posted February 9, 2005 in another film, Dreamcatcher, the gov, again, was prepared to kill off the populacee to contain the disease - i don't know the particulars where reality is concerned, but don't imagine i'd like to be on the receiving end of that order, communicability or not... Angela 1 Posted February 9, 2005 I belkieve both films had a military fellow onboard, so perhaps that might be the policy kill one before 100,000 or a city is wiped out and a small epidemic be comes a pandemic.
Jim Phaserman 0 Posted February 10, 2005 it is my belief that the US would rather, if it had to, kill the one rather than the many. and we have the precision to do it, so nuking a city is not exactly on the drawing boards. I know a few snipers (and non-sniper infantry) who could pick a single person out in a crowd of 10,000 and drop that person with a minimum of blood spatter. DrWho42 13 Posted February 10, 2005 if you remember the movie Outbreak the government was going to nuke the whole town but that was Hollywood.301995[/snapback] As I recall, the President orders this Kentucky city to be nuked in the 1985 film “Return of the Living Dead” since it was invaded by zombies. A bit of an anticlimax, in my opinion, however it solved the problem nontheless. And didn't hinder the sequels to come forth....
