Enterprise's new mission

Warning: Spoilers

Enterprise's new mission into the Delphic Expanse next season will creatively energise the series, executive producer Brannon Braga said last week.

"We thought, 'We've done two years on the show, let's really shake things up, really take some risks,'" he told Kate O'Hare at Zap2it. "It turned out to be very inspirational for Rick [berman] and I."

The new arc will kick off in next week's finale, "The Expanse", which Braga described as "really cool". When a probe launched by an alien race known as the Xindi attacks Earth, killing seven million people, the Enterprise sets course for the Delphic Expanse to stop the Xindi before they launch another attack. Unlike many Trek cliffhangers over the years, this storyline will not be tied up in a neat bow in the season three premiere. "It's going to be resolved in multiple episodes, if not the entire season," Braga said. "It's a big arc."

Although many fans have speculated the Romulans may come to play a big part in forthcoming seasons, Braga said Enterprise should be using fresh scenarios. "Sure, we could have made it the Romulans that attacked Earth. But haven't we seen the Romulans for the past 15 years? Do we really just want to keep seeing the Romulans? No. We've got to do new stuff. We've got to keep pushing the boundaries."

But the writer didn't rule out future appearances by the Romulans or other Trek staples. "That won't mean that we won't continue to see familiar species involved in this epic mission, but the main foe, we wanted to be new."

A myriad of other changes have been reported as being part of this "course correction", including a retrofitted NX-01, new commando-style characters to add "muscle", and a new hairdo and catsuit for T'Pol. Now rumours have emerged online about some sort of romantic relationship between T'Pol and Captain Archer, following on from Archer's sexual frustration in "A Night In Sickbay".

"Jolene Blalock's T'Pol will show more skin — and make out with Scott Bakula's Capt. Archer," TV Guide reported. Aaron Barnhart's interpretation at the Kansas City Star was that "the Vulcan woman and Cap'n Scott Bakula get it on."

Would you rather see the Romulans have the larger role in ENT?

"Jolene Blalock's T'Pol will show more skin — and make out with Scott Bakula's Capt. Archer,"

What do you think about that?

Do you think this new direction for ENT in the upcoming season is a good idea?

Will it help or hurt the show's ratings?

I think if T'Pol and Archer make out, I might stop watching all together.

Editted to add: WHAT THE CRAP? No Romulans? Um, sorry to be a pain B&B, but what the about the Romulan War? Ya know that thing that leads to the founding of the Federation? Are you gonna just ignore that well established fact?

Warning: Spoilers

Scott Bakula (Jonathan Archer) appeared on The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn last Thursday night to talk up Enterprise's season finale.

Prior to Bakula's entrance, host Craig Kilborn presented a clip (available online courtesy of Bakula Games) from the May 21 finale, "The Expanse", to give viewers a taste of what lies ahead:

[scene filmed as one continuous steadicam shot.]

[The senior staff are assembled in a briefing room. The camera starts behind Mayweather's shoulder, with Archer in direct sight.]

Archer: "There's been an attack on Earth."

[Camera swings around to focus on Trip and Hoshi.]

Trip: "What do you mean, attack?"

[Camera moves backwards, passing Mayweather, Phlox, T'Pol and Reed, in turn, before returning to Archer.]

Archer: "A probe, they don't know where it came from. It fired a weapon, that cut a swarthe, 4,000 kilometres long...."

[Camera turns, capturing Archer in profile.]

Archer: "...from Florida to Venezuela. There may have been a million casualties."

[Camera moves around from Archer towards Reed.]

Reed: "A million?"

[Camera now slowly moves backwards to behind Archer, capturing all the senior staff in the shot.]

Archer: "We've been recalled."

After the introductions, Bakula gave his own interpretation of Enterprise's new mission for season three. "The notion with the show now is that we're going into this new area to save the world," he said. "No one's been there, the people that have been there have all been killed or turned inside out — alive — and all kinds of gruesome things, and we're going to go and figure it out. So we have a mission, I'm in charge, you know, it's one of those great save the world kind of things."

The actor was so enthusiastic in relating these details that Kilborn asked if he genuinely paid attention to the scripts for each episode. Bakula assured the host he did. "I love it, I'm a sci-fi kind of nut. I try to invest as much reality into it as I possibly can. There's a great parallel the Star Trek world has been able to pull off between what's happening on our planet today, and what might be happening in the future, but has similarities with the world today."

Initially, Bakula denied knowing about Enterprise's renewal for a third season. "Nobody wanted to call me," he joked, but later admitted he had been contacted by his publicist. However, Bakula said he had not automatically assumed the series would be be picked up. "I was the only guy saying, 'Well, let's just wait, let's just wait'."

Kilborn couldn't resist bringing up Captain Kirk's reputation as a womaniser, and asked Bakula how much romance Jonathan Archer was getting. "Bupkis," he replied. "We have trouble getting women to do the show," he added. "They're all like, 'The Shatner thing going to happen to me?' 'No'." This led the host to ask whether Archer could go in a different direction and start "hanging out with guys". "There's always that question," Bakula replied, laughing.

Many thanks to Layla at Bakula Games for the clip! Thanks also to Pam from Bakula News and Miri for sending this in.

I do not think taking T'Pol further down the sex kitten path will help the series. I am also concerned about the "new muscle" I hope this isn't a ploy to replace (or seriously diminish the roles of) the older cast members with a bunch of baby-faced buff-bodied commando's (M&F)

There's plenty of time to get to the Romulan/Human war. They're planning on this show lasting seven seasons, right?

I just watched the clip, and it looked intense as heck. I admit it. They've got me. I'm hooked.

Scott didn't say anything about him and T'Pol "gettin' it on". He emphasized that the mission was going to be the focus of the show. Perhaps these are just more ugly rumors?

What do you think about that?

Well, I think it was a long time comming (in other words, I thought they'd done that a long time ago.)
