Superman To Take On 'Enterprise'

Genre fans will be given a dilemma this fall when The WB's Smallville moves to the Wednesday 8 p.m. timeslot — a move the network was expected to announce at its fall upfront presentation today. Unless UPN changes its schedule, such a move would put the Superman-based series in direct competition for viewers with Enterprise.

According to MediaWeek's John Consoli, The WB will pair Smallville and Angel on Wednesday nights. Variety reported this morning that Angel would bring popular Buffy: The Vampire Slayer actor James Marsters onto the show to reprise his role as Spike, so Wednesday nights on the WB may draw heavily on UPN's target demographics — males 18-49.

"We needed to make a statement in that time period following the departure of Dawson's Creek," said WB entertainment president Jordan Levin. "It has always been a strong time period for us, and we need to lead off the night with a solid and familiar show."

Smallville this season has averaged a 3.75 rating/5.68 share, compared to Enterprise's 2.59/4.12 average. Among the target young male audience for both shows, Smallville is bringing in more than a third more viewers.

Magna Global USA director of audience analysis Steve Sternberg told Media Week that the Smallville move was logical for the WB. "Splitting up Gilmore Girls and Smallville," the current WB Tuesday night lineup, "makes sense", for the shows appeal to different demographics, "and Smallville can be used to help build another night."

By contrast, Enterprise's ratings have declined over the course of this season. Dawson's Creek, which airs its final episode this week, consistently finished last in the ratings in the 8 p.m. time slot among total viewers, occasionally allowing UPN to finish ahead of the WB for the total nightly ratings.

Having a successful comic franchise show competing directly with the Star Trek spin-off is likely to challenge Enterprise further. As previously reported, UPN will not disclose its fall schedule until Thursday of this week, so it is not yet known what competition the network will offer on Wednesdays this fall.

ENTERPRISE - Wednesday @ 8pm / Encore- Saturday @ 10pm

SMALLVILLE - Tuesday @ 9pm / Encore - Sunday @ 5pm

It'd be a lot easier to catch the encore of ENT on Saturday than to catch the encore of Smallville on Sunday, so I'll be watching Smallville durring the week. When doing their "ratings" thing, do they count encores?

MR Reed target that midwestern town and fire!!! :D :) :o

But seriously I hear it's a good show, still going to stick with enterprise though.

We don't have a UPN affliliate so I have to wait until 11:00 for ENT anyway. So I guess we never get counted in the ratings. Besides I don't have a Nielsen box so I guess it doesn't matter

Is it the ENTIRE state of Florida that lost the UPN affiliate??? I gave up on trying to catch any of the UPN shows since they come on so late at night or so very early in the morning...And if it is the case and the ENTIRE state is left out, that would make a difference on the ratings, premier or encore of ANY UPN series Enterprise, Buffy, ect. ect. ect.

Hmmm...I don't have UPN and I don't Watch Anything On The WB...so this doesn't affect me....and If I did have UPN..it still wouldn't

But...It makes me think about those gosh darn networks doing this...can't they just let people watch ALL Their favorite shows instead of having to choose?

I've got the answer to that dilemma..a digital video recorder!!! It allows me to record up to 2 shows at the same time while watching yet a 3rd. I can then watch ALL of my favorite shows when I want to. The quality of the recorded shows is perfect-I know video quality can be an issue with VCRs-and the best thing of all??? If I record a show I can fast forward through all the commercials!! YAY!!!

Not all of us can do that though. Hmm... I could watch Smallville, then download ENT from my friend and watch it the next day? There's an idea! :look:
