jefffitz 0 Posted July 24, 2004 Stephen Hawking lost a bet, not to Data, but rather to Dr. John Preskill about whether information can escape a blackhole. Hawking bet Preskill in 1997 that information couldn't escape a blackhole- Hawkings conceded recently that information could escape but that it would be so scrambled that it would be impossible to tell what originally went in. Preskill won an encyclopedia of Baseball.

Odie 0 Posted July 24, 2004 (edited) Actually, Professor Hawking offered Dr Preskill an encyclopaedia of cricket as an alternative, because he could find a baseball encyclopeadia in England. Edited July 24, 2004 by Odie

Odie 0 Posted July 24, 2004 It had taken him 30 years to a might that he was wrong. That in itself is a big deal.
