Rivendells_king 0 Posted April 8, 2004 In star trek you look in one episoed and like 20 red shirts get killed and than the next episoded they are completly forgoten and there are even more of them. Were do they all come from? Is there like a machine that is labeled red shirt maker and it makes a constant supply of red shirts, which average life span is a week because most get killed the first day because of acidents, on a ship? Captain Jean-Luc Picard 1 Posted April 8, 2004 Well, it depends on the show. On TOS, I've the impression that it was a running gag. I don't remember many people dieing on TNG. On VOY, they lost 1/3 of the crew when transported to the Delta Quadrant, but they were replaced by Chakotay's Maquis crew. On ENT, they only lost a few people before "Azati Prime". DS9 is the only Trek show that makes Humans and Starfleet ships pop up like rabbits. :(
Q stole my bike 0 Posted April 8, 2004 On the Enterprise (no bloody A,B,C, or D) Starfleet gave them an unlimted supply of redshirts. After each episode they go to the nearest starbase and restock. That way whenever they get in a jam on an away mission they have expendable human resources so someone who's useful (i.e. Kirk or Spock) doesn't get killed. On the Dysfunct, the redshirts are just Jim's friends. Jim is a popular guy, so there's a seeminly infinite number of them.

Pretty much every TOS episode had a script similar to this: Kirk: "Sulu, you and Chekov investigate that building on the far ridge. Spock and I will examine the crash site. Bones, you and Scotty scan that alien-looking vessel over there for lifeforms and weapons. ..... ...... Oh, Ensign Jones...... go look behind that rock!" (Later, Ensign Jones screams, and his charred remains are found.)
Odie 0 Posted April 9, 2004 (edited) Somewhere on the Enterprise Bones walks into a very large room . The lights are dim and quiet music is playing the back round. McCoy couldn't decide if it was Mozart or Bach. The music didn't matter to him. He had a job to do. He truly disliked coming into this room. The knowledge what the future holds for those who occupy this space was close to being unspeakable. The doctor knows his duty to Starfleet, and will perform them to of best his abilities. That doesn't mean he has to like what is doing. He walks around the room with a very large pail his hand as if watering some plants. When he look down and saw some of the new red shirts starting to growing. Just few more days and they will be ready for service. He just wished that Kirk didn't go through all them so quickly! I hope this short story helps! :o Edited April 9, 2004 by Odie

scaleman 0 Posted April 10, 2004 I think it could be starfleet had cloning machines on various starbases and planets, for use in creating the red shirts. It would be like starfleet's equivalent to the klingon forehead issue, "we don't talk about these things with outsiders."
