what does the transmission have to do with

Recommended Posts

Recently my newer car failed to pass emmisions. There is a shifting problem in the transmission. Can anyone tell me what the heck the transmission has to do with Emmisions?

I am not exactly "piston engine saavy", so I can't say for sure. however, I don't think your shifting problems and the emmitions are related. the Transmission's job is to turn your raw horsepower into Torque. at lower gears, the wheels don't turn as fast, but there is more power in them. in higher gears, the wheels turn faster with less power. if you do alot of offroading, you understand this perfectly, I am sure. Emmitions tests just have to do with exhaust, so I can't see how the Transmission would affect this.

If you want the simple answer and i think this is where your getting confused its that the transmission has to do with gear changes and such (not transmitting anything out of the car) emissions are what is comming out of the car if the transmission isnt working efficiently youll put out more pollution

Thanks guys, that's what I believed to be true, also. Nothing whatsoever to do with emmisions. Yet, when I questioned the D.O.T., they say that is has been determined that it does. Is this crazy? Or am I being Bamboozeled?? They have determined that if the O.D.C. is commanded ON, then that's reason for failure.
