The holodecks incorporate replicator technology.  Thus, if you eat a doughnut, get wet, throw a snow ball, or something similar... then it can leave the holodeck.  Something like a book or prop would not though.

Yeah what he said. The TNG technical manual explains it. It's a very interesting read if you have the book or can get it at the library.

I'd have to go back and add everything up to give a complete total, but right now my best estimate is about $500 per year.

 

That amount goes up the larger we get and the more traffic we have. When I upgrade again in a couple months it will add $300 to $400 to that figure.
