  1. One of my favourite episodes. The interaction between Data and Q was wonderful. I especially liked the scene in which Q informs Data that he makes a "far better human than I."

The comedic aspects to this episode were wonderful as well. From the exchange between Q and Worf when Q asks what he must do to prove he's no longer immortal to Guinan conducting her own "test" regarding that very notion.

The ending, when Q has his powers back, is fun to watch. Being the Data fan that I am, it was wonderful to see Data experience his first emotion. I just wish Geordi would have shut up and let Data laugh longer.

  2. I believe I may have enjoyed this episode more if not for the ackward storyline involving the past relationship between Picard and Jenice Manheim.

I did enjoy the storyline about the time distortion much better. Having a turbolift door open to see yourself standing there would definitely be unsettling. Also the scenes of Data going to repair the crack were well done.

  3. Despite a moving funeral service for Tasha at the end, I wasn't sad to see her go. Denise Crosby's penchant for overacting was annoying. Also I was just so darn happy I would not have to listen to Tasha go on about the "rape gangs" of her home planet any longer.

  4. An uneven episode at times. The scenes on the ship of Geordi in command were interesting. Seeing him deal with that uppity officer who wants to take command and then making the decision to separate the saucer section did show the potential of the character.

Riker telling the image of Paul Rice that his ship was the Lollipop and that it is a good ship was amusing.

  5. I really liked the relationship of Riker and Minuet. She certainly was the first example of how easy it could be to fall for a hologram.

  6. A planet run by women - now that's progress!!!

The comedic moments in this episode - Riker in that outfit, Data trying to figure out the atomizer and spraying himself with fragrance - were enough to make it watchable.

  7. I don't know where to start so let me just say this - I LOVE LORE!!! As some of you may have read, the original concept was for Data to have a sister. Brent Spiner was the one who suggested the change and I know of many, many Trek fans who are happy that they did. Lore was a terrific character - sort of a mirror Data, so to speak.

I give this episode a 5, even with the "Wes saves the day" factor. Brent Spiner's performance and a great overall story is enough to make me forget about that "troublesome man child".

  8. I loved this episode. Seeing the holodecks in action as well as Dixon Hill and his South American friend looking quite good in period costume. An early taste of the greatness yet to come.

I would give this episode a 5 if it didn't have another "Wes saves the day" ending. Why Wes was the only one who could fix the holodeck is beyond me.

  9. The best thing about this episode had to be Lwaxana Troi and her trusty man servant, Mr. Homn. Whether Mr. Homn can’t speak or whether he’s just forgotten how from being around Mrs. Troi is a matter that could be debated for years. I loved the dinner scene when Deanna storms out and Data asks if they are going to continue the “petty bickering”.

    Overall, a good episode.

  10. This episode was basically a morality play regarding absolutes. Encountering a civilization where everything was black or white, right or wrong – no room for interpretation or compassion, left Picard with few options. Break the Prime Directive or let Wes die. Unfortunately, at this stage of the series, there were already enough fans who wished Picard just let Wes die.

  11. This episode marked the first appearance of the Traveler, which was okay, but was another “Wes saves the day” episode, which was bad. The fact that only Wes could see that it was the Traveler causing the improvements in the propulsion system and that only Wes could help the Traveler get them back to their starting place was a bit much to take. The Traveler instructing Picard to encourage Wes and how special Wes was made me cringe.

The special effects for the area of space where the Enterprise was propelled were quite good. It was also interesting watching the hallucinations being caused as they were in this unknown area of space.

  12. Our introduction to the Ferengi but, then, you shouldn’t judge a species based on first impressions.

An average episode which begins with an interesting stalemate when both the crews of the Enterprise and the Ferengi ship believe the other is responsible for the loss of energy each ship was experiencing.

My personal favourite scene from this episode involves Data’s encounter with the Chinese finger puzzle in the observation lounge. Just one of the little touches that I grew to love about this series. Riker asking for permission to give the Ferengi a box of the puzzles at the end was a nice touch as well.

  13. The first clunker of the series has little redeeming qualities other than Wes does not save the day. Man smitten with Yar, man kidnaps Yar, Yar fights for vaccine, man breaks word and loses everything.

  14. The first of the “Wes saves the day” episodes that became too prevalent in the first two seasons of the series, this episode was introduced to early in the series. It would have been much more effective after the personalities of the crew had been more established. However, it does have its comedic moments throughout as we watch the crew lose their inhibitions.

The major negatives with the episode revolve around the aforementioned “Wes saves the day” syndrome. The fact that an “inebriated” Wes was able to “take command” of the ship and erect a force field around Engineering keeping two experienced and uninfected officers at bay was bad however when Wes saves the ship and her crew from the asteroid by turning the tractor beam into a repulser beam in seconds after the Chief Engineer says it would takes weeks to lay out new circuits was too much. No wonder Wes has become such a target to Trek fans. To paraphrase Jessica Rabbit, Wes was not bad. He was just written that way.

That being said, I do enjoy this episode, despite Wes’ antics.

  15. Encounter at Farpoint marked the return of Star Trek to the small screen. In its original format, this episode was to be a one-hour episode until Paramount came to Gene Roddenberry and told him they wanted it to be a two-hour movie instead. Mr. Roddenberry resisted at first before agreeing and all Star Trek fans are thankful that he did. In order to add the second hour, a storyline was created involving Q, who went on to be one of the biggest fan favourite characters in Trek history.

Encounter at Farpoint had its good moments, mostly involving Q but it also had its not so good moments. The opening walkabout by Picard seemed visually cheesy to me for some reason, the portrayal of Tasha Yar was rather over the top and the alien life forms that looked like jellyfish in space were a bit much.

However, the good definitely outweighs the bad. The introduction of Q and the trial of humanity was wonderful. The chemistry of the cast was evident despite their unfamiliarity with each. The special effects were good, from the new warp visual, to watching the saucer separate, to our first look at the holodeck.

Overall, a good beginning for a great series.

  16. that's why I didn't mention the other lady's name, I forgot it too. But yeah, if you love 80's and early 90's music, you'd like this show. Next week is

    Vanilla Ice

    The knack

    Tommy Twotone

    Hadaway

and some one else I can't remember :assimilated:

The lady you've forgotten was CeCe Peniston and the one you're forgetting is The Motels (never heard of them).

The Knack is going to be performing My Sharona. With the way the FCC is these days, I'm surprised they can get it past the censors. LOL (For those too young to remember The Knack there was some controversy regarding the sexual overtones of the song).

  17. @ Takara

Did you mean those two guys?  :assimilated:

Ain't-It-Cool-News reports that the short-list for his replacement comprises of John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines) and Brett Ratner (Red Dragon).

They were the ones I meant.

Here are links to more information regarding Brett Ratner and John Moore. Ratner's resume is a little longer than Moore's but I'm not sure if either is right for this project.

  18. I voted Icheb. I liked the character even though I wasn't completely familiar with his backstory.

Other young characters I liked that can be included in the one time appearance category are Marissa (Disaster), Gia (Thine Own Self) and Jono (Suddenly Human). Since they technically count as young characters, I was also impressed by the performances of the young actors who played Picard, Guinan, Keiko and Ro in Rascals.

  19. But on Trekkies 2, they do interview the "normal" fans. so they make up for what they missed in the original movie.

As far as I'm concerned, too little, too late. The damage was already done.

  20. Good gosh, I had a Trek day today. I watched TOS' City on the Edge of Forever, then TNG's The Defector, followed by VOY's The Chute on Space this afternoon. Later I watched Gambit Parts I and II on DVD. After that came the Enterprise episode Daedalus on A-Channel and then Chain of Command Parts I and II on Spike.

I love days like this. :assimilated:

  21. We have many amazing actors in Canada that are completely unknown in the US but I wouldn't say that we have better actors. I think there are some amazing actors that come from countries from around the world.

The thing is that the most famous actors usually aren't the best. Of course there are some exceptions but as we know, talent does not dictate success.

Canadian programming is marketed around the world but when it comes to the US you'll have to look to specialty channels or PBS to see it.
