Black History Month

Recommended Posts

February is Black History Month. I haven't seen anything on the board about it but I thought it appropriate to mention it. I know TOS is credited with airing the first interracial kiss on television.

And most of us probably have read about Nichelle Nichols meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King and how he commended the example she was for other young black women.

In general Star Trek has been regarded as groundbreaking in showing the future we all hope to achieve - a future that is egalitarian.

In fact I think that is the common thread most of here have - that hope for a better future.

To tell you the truth I'm against black history month. I find that in today's day and age we are far to multicultural to focus on a single race. I think we need to have multicultural month or months, where people can learn more of their own cultures and those of others rather then limiting ourselves to a single race.

What are you talking about?? Just because Canada is a multicultural country doesn't mean we can't celebrate a certain culture!! That is what Canada's multicultural policy is all about: so that everyone can retain their own identity and culture, and not be assimilated. Multiculturalism is about being able to celebrate one's specific culture! And everyone should, and does, have the right to do so!!

But only focusing on one is a form of discrimination, and they are not enough months to celebrate all cultures. So it would be better to have a multicultural month where we celebrate everyones personal identities.
