B) If the BIOS sees the drive and the cables are connected but Windows won't open any discs then my thought is that the Laser may be out of alignment (The drive has gone bad). I've had 2 or 3 CD drives go bad on me in the past. The good thing about that though, if there can be a good thing about something failing is that CD drives are cheap and easy to install. In fact if you watch the sales papers for Best Buy (if you are in the US) a lot of times they will put CD-RW drives on sale and with rebates the drive is only $10 or even free. Try using a different disk in the drive and if you do not receive the error, then the disk is bad. If you receive the error with other disks then your drive may need to be cleaned or it may have been damaged.

ddillard 2 Posted December 7, 2003 Ok thanks for th ehelp the disk i am trying to use is a new win 98 CD. B) I would still try a different disk, the disk may have been damaged during shipping or be defective. But if not then VBG is correct the drive is probably shot. cptwright 1 Posted December 8, 2003 BTW are you using windows 98? i see you said new windows 98, in class we had a problem with some of the systems and windows 98. if you are using it for the first time, and now you dont show a cd drive, check to see if you have an intel chipset on your mother board. if it is, thats probably the problem, what it is is that the ide controllers somehow lose the cd drive after the installation of windows 98. online there are some patches and fixes for it but they dont always work your gonna just have to play with it.
