Subject: The Veteran

Recommended Posts

From an E-mail:

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher,

who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,

who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet,

who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,

who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,

who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician,

Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN,

who salutes the Flag,

who serves under the Flag,

ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD,

AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

Amy emailed me a funny email earlier this year and it had this "poem" at the end, it had a slightly different ending though and I think it kind of makes the point even stronger.

> It is the Soldier Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, and

> Whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the

> flag."

Here's a link to the email that Amy sent me:

I want to wish all my fellow veterans well. And for those who have not served please shake the hand of a veteran you know and say "Thanks".

Spec 4 here also, I was in a couple of units but the last unit I was in was HHC 57th Signal Battalion, 3rd Signal Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas. Our Motto was "Vincimus Spatium - We Conquer Space" because we controlled the airwaves (communications) both with conventional communications and satellite communications.

Without the Signal Corps the Army doesn't talk.

Our motto was "Pathfinders" we were the guys that cleared the way so equipment could move thru. We busted traps and made the bridges and cleared the roads.
