Atari Sells Cryptic Studios

Earlier this month, TrekToday reported that Atari was looking to sell Cryptic studios after less than three years of ownership.

 

Atari’s attempt to sell Cryptic Studios has been successful, with the sale of Cryptic Studios to a Chinese online gaming giant.

 

 

 

STOSmall11.gifSeveral years of losses were behind the decision to sell Cryptic Studios. “In line with the previously stated strategy of fewer but more profitable releases and further expansion into casual online and mobile games, the Company has determined that external development creates more flexibility in the changing marketplace,” said an Atari spokesperson.

 

The buyer, Perfect World, paid fifty million dollars to buy Cryptic Studios. “This strategic acquisition will add attractive games to our portfolio, which will help us further penetrate into the US and global online game markets,” said Perfect World CEO Michael Chi.

 

Cryptic Studios is the developer of the online MMORPG Star Trek: Online, which was released in North American last February.
