$#*! My Dad Says, a new show starring Ryan Devlin as the son of a profane and funny father played by William Shatner, has been picked up by CBS and will air on the fall schedule.

 

 

Based on a true life son and father, $#*! My Dad Says began life as a Twitter feed begun by the son, Justin Halpern, in 2009.

 

 

Halpern tweeted the profane, scathing and often hilarious utterances from his father, and soon found that he had gained a large following. The popularity soon led to a book deal and now to the sitcom featuring Shatner and Devlin as father and son.

 

 

A typical fatherly bit of advice (one of the rare non-profane ones) is as follows: “I didn’t say you were ugly. I said your girlfriend is better looking than you, and standing next to her, you look ugly.”

 

 

$#*! My Dad Says now has more than a million followers on Halpern’s Twitter account.

It works fine as funny snippets over Twitter or Facebook, but I can't see having enough material for a series.

It sounds like a thinking comedy, which I love. I have too agree it probably will not make it look at Police Squad a thinking comedy. It lasted 6 shows I think.

This could potentially end up doing alright. My thinking was that it was dependent on where it was put on the schedule. CBS has typically had two comedy nights: Monday and Wednesday. However, they've changed things up and now $#*! My Dad Says is going to between The Big Bang Theory and CSI on Thursday nights (8:30 ET). That's potentially a really good spot for it. Those are two of the more popular shows on the network and both sort of attract the kind of viewers who probably won't mind seeing more of Shatner (i.e. nerds).

 

Personally, I'll probably end up watching it because I'll need something to watch between TBBT and Fringe/The Office (if Fringe is off for the week). I was going to check it out anyway because it seems like Shatner could make this work.

I doubt I'll watch it at all. I don't watch a lot of TV as it is and rarely ever watch anything "live", meaning as it's aired. I generally only watch my season passes on my TiVo and those are getting fewer and fewer.
