Theunicornhunter 2 Posted June 22, 2008 (edited) BEIJING - Beijing has dispatched 8,000 toilet maintenance staff, each responsible for a specific public restroom in the city and trained in hygiene standards and techniques, Olympic knowledge and practical English expressions, Xinhua said on Friday..... The city was also struggling with which style of commode would be best, noting Westerners prefer seated toilets, which are more comfortable and convenient for the elderly or infirm. The squat toilets widely used in Chinese public facilities are considered more hygienic as there is no direct contact with body, it said. At more than 30 test events held by the Games organizers, the squat versions drew frequent complaints from foreigners, said Xinhua. ... There's no delicate way to say this - but you can use the seated version without touching and while I've never seen their version - it looks like splashback might be a problem unless you're a yoga master. I mean some folks would never get up if they got that low to the ground. I never knew there were such cultural differences in going to the powder room. Here's a link with a photo the Chinese version msnbc Edited June 22, 2008 by TheUnicornHunter
Wishfire 2 Posted June 22, 2008 They should use both. Squat toilets for everyone who is used to it, and seat toilets for everyone is used to those.
He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted June 22, 2008 (edited) I had to use a squat toilet a couple times in South Korea, and I have to say you do need a fair amount of manual dexterity to use those things. They may be more hygenic, but only slightly so, and you have to weigh that against the possibility of injury if you use them. I mean imagine what could happen. You are using a squat toilet the first time ever, you loose your balance, and before you know it you are rolling around in your own poop. Not a pretty picture. By the way, can anyone tell me what is wrong with this picture? Edited June 22, 2008 by Lt. Van Roy
Wishfire 2 Posted June 22, 2008 By the way, can anyone tell me what is wrong with this picture? 1. It's not a squat toilet. 2. Socks on smooth wood. 3. His pants are still up. 4. It appears that his head is missing. 5. No porn to read.
He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted June 22, 2008 6. No laptop to post to this board. Actually, that is a squat toilet according to Wikipedia. That's where I got the picture from.
Theunicornhunter 2 Posted June 22, 2008 I have heard that some US colleges had problems with exchange students - they were finding heel marks on toilet seats. I think they had to install such a toilet somewhere now that I think about it. I hope travel brochures warn people.

youbroughtheryouRiker 2 Posted June 22, 2008 Maybe it's just because I wear size 13 shoes, but keeping the mess off your feet looks to be another problem.
He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted June 22, 2008 There is another aspect of this debate that hasn't been considered yet. For guys, the squat toilet with that tiny hole is a lot farther away when you have to pee.
