NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a patrol horse found his own way back through Manhattan streets to his stable after throwing his rider.

The officer was treated for minor injuries after traffic noise spooked Aldo on Friday. The 8-year-old took off through about eight blocks to the stable.

New York police spokesman Paul Browne says the horse "knows his turf."

Aldo suffered a few small cuts. The 21-year police veteran riding him had some injuries to his neck and shoulder.

Aldo has been a police horse for about a year.

No oats for THIS nag!..... B)

I thought NYC police horses were supposed to be used to traffic noises?

And why do big cities have police horses, but many small towns don't? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Why would you have horses in a small town?

Big Cities have a lot of congestion and I mean big cities with a densely populated downtown area. Horses can move more quickly through congestion than moving on foot or with a bicycle. Small towns are rarely going to have major congestion but will likely have a less densely populated area so officers will have to respond to calls over a greater geographic area.

Contrary to popular belief - people do not ride horses through the streets of small towns - although the gas crunch may change that. :)
