A l t e r E g o 9 Posted May 11, 2009 I have no problem revisiting what I said. I have to admit given the success of the new BG the idea may hold some merit but it'd be a very square pill to swallow. I'd rather the owners just put some real sweat equity into creating bigger better more competitive Trek in the same universe we all know and love. Any more opinions on this subject? I believe the topic refers to a full on, forget everything which came before reboot which is not what we got. :P Star Trek isn't a square pill at all, for me. You know, now that I think about it, that CJLP or anyone would even think of asking proves something had to be done.
Jack_Bauer 1 Posted May 11, 2009 Click for Spoiler: Yeah, even though this is called a reboot, it is really more of a reboot/prequel/sequel (i.e. alternate timeline, set before series with characters largely similar/villain (and another character) from the future. It is definitely not a reboot in the vein of Casino Royale or Batman Begins. Or Straczynski's terrible idea. Shudder.
Angela 1 Posted May 12, 2009 I think as can be told through the alternative theme music this is an AU version of star trek.... Not the trek we grew up with. This is what is reinvigorating the series, as it opens the characters up to differences and also the situations are going to be somewhat skewed because of the various differences. The trek we know and love exists in a different universe under quantum physics. this is just a telling of a different universe. I like this idea because it allows more people to start with a high tech version and allows more people in to see it as a viable non cheesy entity. And Shatner had more cheese than all the chicago pizzas eaten in a year.

Voyager recruit 0 Posted May 16, 2009 Reboot shows like my favorites, Voyager, or Enterprise? NO!!They are as they are, whatever ones' tastes. Films may be one thing, but this general, 'oh, let's do it over' can go too far. The actors who brought us Archer, Sisko and Janeway and Picard should REMAIN the people who gave flesh and wonderful substance to the captains and crew whomever we love .The subsequent series are to me things that, despite whatever criticisms handed this or that one-some, sadly, more than others-kept the spirit of ST going, for me, and I followed them all over the years. Just because some think they were lacking, well, that's their opinion, if I can say, but, they all have their loyal fans, and we're content I think most of us with what we were given. Could there have been improvements, or things not going a certain way? Sure. But I still believe they deserve to be kept as they are. However, as for a new series altogether-BRING IT On!! I agree with the above statement, but ... I wonder what a new version of the Animated series would look like? Probably pretty interesting and the animation would certainly be more lifelike, but they would need to get the same quality of writers for it to be as good. And at the risk of annoying Takara, I thought discussion of Chicago style pizza was NEVER off topic! Edited May 16, 2009 by trekz
Takara_Soong 4 Posted May 16, 2009 Rather than a reboot of the post-TOS series, I'd like to see what the 24th century has to offer based on the timeline from the new movie but with different characters. Maybe in 10 or 15 years I could handle a reboot of TNG but it's too soon now. And if anyone wants to discuss Chicago-style pizza they are free to do so in the Off Topic Discussions forum. And I'm not even close to being annoyed.
VaBeachGuy 12 Posted May 16, 2009 I'm no fan of the canon problems that have been raised by the new movie, I wish they had been more careful on a few things but I'd actually be interested to see this crew in a weekly series. I'd much rather they do it in the 'real' Star Trek timeline though. They could still have new stories and shape the characters the way they'd want to in order to attract new fans and still stay within canon. Using the "alternate timeline" excuse is just a cop out in my view. A "catch all" to cover themselves for a lack of respect/knowledge/research/caring (or whatever else it might be) about the history of Trek.
youbroughtheryouRiker 2 Posted May 16, 2009 I'd like to see a new series that does more to establish relations in the Beta Quadrant. DS9 took us into the heart of the Gamma with the Dominion, and VOY gave a good beginner's course on the Delta, but no series really looked too much at the Beta Quadrant. I don't have too much in mind for a staple crew... I do think now that we've had a woman and a minority as captains, a new series should have a non-human, Federation species as captain. Maybe an Andorian.
Voyager recruit 0 Posted May 16, 2009 RE the Beta Quadrant, yes, it's true, there has been nothing mentioned of it from a species stanpoint-now, technically, according to "Star Trek:Star Charts'' the two Empires of course lie in part there..in Voyager's ''Before and After'' the Doctor references the Atho, a race with precognitve skills, but that's it. I would be curious, as well, to see what lies beyond the known regions-and after all, it is our neighboring quadrant....an alien captain would be a new ground-breaker for Trek, certainly.... Chataeya 0 Posted May 17, 2009 Maybe a Feline type something like I was trying to do with Chataeya. If we try to put some things in here maybe they will see it and give them some Ideas ( one can only hope) that will send things off on a good start,as I too would Love to see a weekly series again on TV CBS NBC or ABC comes to my mine as all i have is free TV. Takara_Soong 4 Posted May 17, 2009 but no series really looked too much at the Beta Quadrant. I have to disagree. Vulcan, the Klingon and Romulan Empires, Andoria, Risa, Rigel, Son'a Prime and a number of other planets from the Beta Quadrant have been the subjects of many episodes/movies in the franchise. Other than the Founders and the worlds they controlled, they only really scratched the surface of the Gamma Quadrant on DS9.
youbroughtheryouRiker 2 Posted May 17, 2009 I thought Vulcan, Klingon, etc. were all fellow Alpha Quadrant species. DS9 touched on a few other species besides the Dominion, but you also have to remember, the Dominion was the superpower of the entire quadrant, so when you deal with the Dominion, you've pretty much dealt with the Gamma Quadrant, unless you really want to get into some of the species that worked and lived under the Dominion. And I like Chataeya's idea of a feline Captain... a relative of Lt. M'Ress? Tie the Animated Series a bit more tightly to that which is canon? I like the idea. Also, a fellow member of Arex's species... if they can do the CG for Species 8472, a four-legged Starfleet officer in a live action series should be doable. Jack_Bauer 1 Posted May 17, 2009 The Federation straddles the Alpha-Beta border and the majority of the Klingon and Romulan Empires are in the Beta Quadrant. According to non-canon sources for the most part.
youbroughtheryouRiker 2 Posted May 17, 2009 Yeah, non-canon... I would think most things Federation would have to be relatively close, and therefore Alpha. Klingon, Romulan, and maybe Ferengi I could see being Beta... but I'd still have to say the likelihood lies in Alpha, especially with the Dominion Wars forcing alliances with Klingons and Romulans for the sake of the whole Alpha Quadrant. VaBeachGuy 12 Posted May 17, 2009 The Federation straddles the Alpha-Beta border and the majority of the Klingon and Romulan Empires are in the Beta Quadrant. According to non-canon sources for the most part. I've seen maps of the Star Trek Galaxy that puts Romulus and Kronos in the Beta Quadrant but I can't think of any episode (or movie) that supports this. I could be forgetting something of course, but in DS9 all of the references during the Dominion War was that the Romulans, Klingons and the Federation were fighting for the survival of the Alpha Quadrant. Of course that's not to say that the Romulans and Klingons wouldn't fight to save the Alpha Quadrant but I'd think if they were actually from the Beta Quadrant that some reference to that would be made somewhere. The only canon reference to the Beta Quadrant that I can think of off the top of my head is from Voyager's "Message in a Bottle" episode where the Doctor is sent to a Federation ship which is in the Beta Quadrant. There may be other references but that's the only one I can think of.
youbroughtheryouRiker 2 Posted May 17, 2009 (edited) The only other one I can think of is "Valiant" from DS9 when Nog and Jake find themselves aboard the ship commanded and ran entirely by the Red Squad. They make mention that they were on a mission on the perimeter of the Beta Quadrant. Edited May 17, 2009 by youbroughtheryouRiker
