VaBeachGuy 12 Posted February 17, 2008 August 2, 1990 Iraq invades Kuwait. I'll have to add that one, I remember it clearly because I was on CQ duty in the Army on August 1st (and was quite mad because it was Pay Day and Pay Day was always a half day). For those that don't know, CQ duty (Charge of Quarters) is a 24 hour shift (no sleeping allowed). Me and another soldier from my unit had to sit in the Day Room (Where a TV and Pool table were located, like a recreation room) and just be there on duty in case anyone needed help or in case something happened like a fire or anything you can think of. Very boring task but at least you got the next 24 hours off (which I always slept a good portion of lol). Anyway, me and Specialist Darleen Williams had CQ Duty that night. We sat there watching videos, eating pizza and just generally BSing the whole night. The only movie that I can remember that we watched was "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation". Anyway, the news (CNN) was on somewhere around 4 or 5 in the morning when they announced the invasion and showed the tanks rolling through Kuwait City. I told Williams then and there that we'd be deployed.
