HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - Two men are behind bars after police say they attacked a woman with a hammer who was going into a Virginia Lottery office to cash winning lottery tickets worth $10,000.

Hampton police spokeswoman Allison Good says Blake Jordan and Kenneth Marshall, both 22, were arrested Monday and charged with maiming, attempted robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. They are being held in Hampton City Jail.

Police say one of the men was the nephew of the 55-year-old woman, who was going to the store to cash in two $5,000 winning lottery tickets. Police did not identify the woman or say which man was related to her.

Lottery worker Keary Fox, 56, said he first heard the woman scream around 1:10 p.m. Monday. He ran outside and saw Jordan on top of the woman.

Fox said he put Jordan in a headlock while a customer took the hammer out of his hand. They held Jordan until police arrived and arrested him. Marshall was arrested later Monday.

Good said the victim suffered lacerations to the back of her head and was treated at a local hospital.

How stupid is this? Wouldn't it have made more sense to attack her AFTER she had cashed in the ticket?
