trekz 7 Posted November 18, 2007 Thieving monkeys 'out of control' in northeast India Sat Nov 17, 12:12 PM ET GUWAHATI, India (AFP) - Troupes of monkeys are out of control in India's northeast, stealing mobile phones and breaking into homes to steal soft drinks from refrigerators, lawmakers in the region have complained. "Monkeys are wreaking havoc in my constituency by taking away mobile phones, toothpastes, sipping coke after opening the refrigerators," Hiren Das told Assam state's assembly. He said the primates were "even slapping women who try to chase them". "It is a cause of serious concern in my area, with more than 1,000 such simians turning aggressive by the day," fumed Goneswar Das, another legislator representing Raha in eastern Assam. Assam's wildlife minister, Rockybul Hussain, said the state government has formed a panel to study the problem. Because of shrinking forest cover, monkeys have increasingly moved into cities elsewhere in India as well. Last week, around two dozen people were hurt after monkeys rampaged through a New Delhi neighbourhood. Last month, the deputy mayor of Delhi died when he fell from his balcony after being attacked by monkeys. Efforts to drive out the animals is complicated by the fact that devout Hindus view them as an incarnation of Hanuman, the monkey god who symbolises strength. END STORY ------------------------------------------------------- Since man is monkeying with their environment, turnabout is fair play. At least the monkeys are concerned with dental health. I'm assuming they ARE using the toothpste AFTER drinking the soda! :P Seriously this does sound awful ... and of course the government has a panel to study the problem. :P :P Perhaps this culture will have to adapt the way the monkeys are viewed. Kor37 9 Posted November 18, 2007 One of the more disturbing reports I've heard was where a man came home to find a monkey wearing his bathrobe drinking a glass of Chivas. His wife was laying in their bed leisurely smoking a cigarette................ Isn't this how Planet Of The Apes got started?
Theunicornhunter 2 Posted November 18, 2007 While the headline sounds funny - it is sad in that someone has actually been killed by these monkeys. And the US isn't exempt from such things - we've posted stories here about animals typically associated with the wild showing up in neighborhoods and businesses - such as foxes in restaurants. Around here that includes bears and alligators - and although much less serious but more common - chickens - yes street and neighborhood roaming chicken gangs. Someone must stand up to these roaming chicken gangs - although it will take someone with a lot of pluck. For anyone who can get these chicken gangs under control, it will be quite a feather in their cap. Egg-zactly how to do it is a mystery - perhaps the great hero Chickenman must come out of retirement! It really is a problem of human encroachment and animal adaptability. Animals need to be scared off from suburban and urban areas, if possible, when they become a problem. Man must also stop being surprised when they keep advancing into animal territory when the animals adapt and refuse to leave what is, or used to be, for decades or centuries, their home. He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted November 18, 2007 Isn't this how Planet Of The Apes got started? Not in either of the movies, but it did happen that way in the original book.
He Who Shall Not Be Named 2 Posted September 25, 2010 Isn't "chicken gang" a contradiction? It sounds like "military intelligence" or "political science".
