More 'Star Trek' Casting Rumours

Will 'Heroes' star Lee follow Quinto? Which actor will speak with a Scottish accent?

While reporters seek confirmation that Zoe Saldana is in line to play Uhura, other rumours continue to circulate about who might play the other familiar characters in the upcoming Star Trek film.

 

Scotland's Daily Record has an "exclusive" claiming that Still Game star Greg Hemphill has auditioned for the role of Scotty. James McAvoy has long been rumoured to be under consideration for that role.

 

Hemphill, who was reportedly flown to London by Paramount, appeared in a Star Trek parody in the BBC's Chewin' The Fat, uttering the line, "Set phasers tae malky." The actor was brought up in Canada, like original Scotty James Doohan.

 

A friend of Hemphill's told the paper, "Greg is a big Star Trek fan and his agent heard the Scotty role was up...he was over the moon when they gave him an audition. He is well known in Scotland for his comedy but this role would launch him into Hollywood."

 

The Daily Record reported a Tom Cruise cameo and a Russell Crowe role as a villain as if they were established deals, so the report should be taken as hearsay.

 

Meanwhile, TrekMovie.com has reported that Zachary Quinto's Heroes co-star, Jason Kyson Lee, may be in the running to play Sulu.

 

Asked whether it was true, the actor laughed and said "I don’t know!" several times. This could mean that he is under orders not to discuss any possible casting, or it could mean that, as it was suggested McAvoy might have been doing, he is trying to connect his name with the role and is hoping that it will be reported that he is under consideration.

 

Ain't It Cool News's Moriarty has cited unnamed sources stating that Leonard Nimoy's Spock will be the real star of the movie, and the plot speculation that follows has been widely reported as a script leak. But this information is entirely unconfirmed.
