thayln 0 Posted August 21, 2003 I was re-watching The Cogenitor last night, damn what a great ep, and I realized how often we actually get to see Archer with his nose in an honest to goodness book. I really love that all Captains of Enterprise are bibliophiles, and I was thinking we could maybe have some fun trying to figure our what Archer is reading when we see him with a book. Toward the end of Cogenitor he's sitting on his bed reading with Porthos. I figure the obvious guess would be that he's reading Shakespear, since he and the Vissian Captain were discussing The Scottish Play earlier in the episode, but is there a better choice, something that fits the theme of the show? What do you think?
A l t e r E g o 9 Posted August 21, 2003 "The Romulan Star Empire" Based on the episode events I think Shakespeare is the best bet but it could have been something else, not sure what though, I need too re-watch it for more ideas.
ConnorExum 0 Posted August 21, 2003 Swank... It was just stuck inside the hardcover 22nd century edition to Shakespear's greatest plays! He's been in space don't tell me he's not in need of action!
VaBeachGuy 12 Posted August 21, 2003 The book is too small to be Shakespear's, if you look at it looks more like a booklet. Since he is holding a waterpolo ball I would think the booklet has something to do with waterpolo.
Riaan 0 Posted August 31, 2003 I think if Archer wanted to read Shakespear, he wouldn't have had room for a copy of the plays and sonets, etc.. He would just read them online form the ships computer. How about the poetry of Yeats. After all, his mother used to read him "The Song of the Wandering Aengus" when he was a boy. I would think he would bring along the copy she read from, as a way still feeling connected to family, to earth. We know Archer's father is dead, but we know nothing about his mother--is she dead also, or is she still alive, just out of his life somehow? This might make an interesting backstory on Archer. Theunicornhunter 2 Posted September 2, 2003 He was reading "Men are from Mars, Women are from Vulcan" I think he should have been reading the parable of the mote and the beam.
Commodore Stone 0 Posted September 2, 2003 Maybe he was reading Howard Fast's Spartacus or a book on slavery. It would have fit.
A l t e r E g o 9 Posted September 2, 2003 I re-watched this episode yesterday but forgot to look for the book however in The Expanse, I noticed he is reading the Bible when T'pol comes to visit.
Riaan 0 Posted September 3, 2003 I, too, like it that the captains are bibliophiles. I love seeing them reading honest to goodness hard bound books. I work in a university library so it really touches my heart. I'll have to re-watch the episodes y'all mentioned to see what Archer is reading. Every chance I get, I have my nose in a book--preferably sci-fi. (Right now I'm reading the "House trilogy" of Dune and am on the second book, House Harkonnen.) I read the original Dune trilogy back in the late 70's. (Yes, I go back that far...)
