Dozen stung in SoCal street light bee attack

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A swarm of bees living in a street light attacked more than a dozen people waiting at a bus stop and one woman was sent to the hospital, authorities said.

A car bumped the light pole Friday, infuriating bees who had a hive in the light. A dozen people who were waiting at the bus stop or pumping gas at a nearby station were stung one to 10 times each, fire Battalion Chief Pete Lawrence said.

One woman was stung about 50 times. She flagged down a driver, who took her to a police station. She was treated at a hospital but her injuries were not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

Bus service was suspended for about two hours until firefighters used foam to smother the hive, Lawrence said.

I don't know why people are saying that the bees have disappeared. They seem to be all over the place!

Smother the bees? Couldn't they have just called in local beekeepers to swarm the street light to remove the bees in a quick "sting" operation?

I wonder what type of bees.

They were in So-Cal, so maybe lo-Cal or local?

SoCal is Southern California, and bees where at it is not far from where I live.

The reason why I asked, because the bees could have been Africanized bees.

I know Odie. So-Cal and Lo-Cal, as in Low-Cal, was a pun, as in Low calorie honeybees.

It is possible that they could be Africanized bees, which have been migrating north over years after being transported to the Western Hemisphere and then having escaped (supposedly brought here to interbreed with honeybees in this hemisphere). They are supposed to be more agressive, although the bees in the article may just have been stressed with constant human traffic and the usual swatting at bees that some people do whenever they see bees, rather than just trying to coexist or avoid areas where bees are. Obviously their new choice of home was unfortunate.
