In 1988 only about 10 percent knew enough about science to understand reports in major newspapers, a figure that grew to 28 percent by 2005, according to Jon D. Miller, a Michigan State University professor... Wow, more than 1 in 4 Americans understand enough science to read the newspaper; and that's good news? I agree TUH that calling 25% science literacy a good thing, or good news, is pretty sad. Sure the percentage has gone up, but it is still a terrible percentage. Sadly such barely improved statistics were used to claim great progress in schools by GWB in Texas, and are being used, also in school "progress" by Hizonner Mayor Daley in his re-election efforts here in Chicago. There are some fine magnet schools here, but overall there is minor improvement in test scores, high dropout rates and very low graduation rates, yet it is being hailed as success. Very disappointing! Edited February 19, 2007 by trekz
