Retro Review: The Doomsday Machine

Recommended Posts

One of my favorite TOS episodes.

I felt terrible for Commodore Decker. In the short time he was on screen, you sort of got the feeling that he was a great commander, almost Kirk-like. But losing his entire crew just snapped his mind. Too bad.

You know, I just noticed that James Blish' adaption of this episode in the novelization is different.

In the adapation by Blish, Decker doesn't die.

If you want to find out what really happened to Decker, go to NewVoyages.com and download the episode entitled "In Harms Way". Its sort of a sequel to "The Doomsday Machine" and they do a fantastic job with it!

When I first saw this episode, I hated it. I prefered the episodes where they went on away missions. But after watching it a few times, I began to like the character development in the episode. Kirk thought Decker was obsessed. But eventually took one of his ideas, minus the suicidal part.
