Parlez-vous Texas Hold 'Em?

Recommended Posts

With the thread about Poker Night, I realised: Alot of people may be interested, but might not know the lingo. I want to start a running "Cheat Sheet" of Hold 'Em lingo.

TERM EXPLAINATION

HOLE CARDS the two cards delt to each player. Normally left face down on the table.

Board the Community Cards

Community Cards 5 cards laid in the center of the table, face up, that can be used by any player.

Flop First 3 Community Cards placed on the Board.

Turn also called 4th Street, the 4th Community Card

River also called 5th Street, the last community card placed on the board.

Showdown follows last round of betting after 5th Street, when the players lay show their hole cards.

Play the Board Using all 5 Community Cards as your hand. Declared at the Showdown, "I Play the Board".

Blind (small and big) Forced bets that take place before the cards are delt. The player directly to the right of the Button or Dealer places the small blind (1/2 of the minimum Bet) the player to his or her right places the Big Blind (the minimum Bet). THis opens the betting.

1st Possition the first player to act after the cards are delt.*

On the Button In Casino-style games, the player to the left of the small blind. This is considered the best possition, since you can see what everyone else does. In Pick-up Games, this is the dealer. Last to Act.

Check Passing the action to the next person down the line. Unless the game is played with Antes instead of Blinds, checking is not allowed before the Flop. Also, once play is Opened (someone places the first bet) in Ante games, Checking is not allowed.

Check-Raise A questionable move, illegal in some places, where a player checks initially, then raises the bet once the action returns to that player. It is illegal in some places because it gives the player an undue advantage.

String Raise Common mistake amongst rookies, Example: "I see your bet, AND raise you three"

A string raise is essentially two bets in one. SEEing a bet is the same as Calling. If you SEE someone's bet, that is your action. Raising is a seperate action.

Call/See Bet Matching the bet of the person before you.

Open In games played with an Ante rather than Blind, The Open is the first bet placed.

Raise Increasing the bet. "I Raise you 5".

Fold Leaving a hand. when you fold, you turn your cards over to the dealer. You're out of the hand. Folding also forfiets your bets.

Muck Throwing away a losing hand (not showing it)

All In Betting all of your money.

Doubling Up winning an all-in bet.

I've heard a few different terms for some of the ones you mentioned. On the World Poker Tour they have referred to a pair of Queens as the Hilton Sisters a few times.

There's another term for QQ also, which includes a slang term for breasts, so I didn't include it here. There are actually alot of terms that are used in home games that just aren't appropriate for an Online or Casino game.
