A Reminder About Posting Images

Recommended Posts

A reminder to all members, when you are posting images from another site to the boards, please save them to your hard drive and upload them from your computer. Most sites have deactivated the ability to post pictures from their sites onto others as it affects their bandwidth numbers and that costs them money. Posting images that link back to the originating site is bandwidth theft. Many websites, like the excellent Trek site "Star Trek in Sound and Vision", have been forced to shut down because of this problem.

You can use features at STF to upload images to the boards. As well, many members have accounts at free online photo albums such as Photo Bucket and Image Station where they host images. There are a number of other free photo storage sites on the web and all are pretty easy to use.

I, as many of you have already noticed, have hotlinked to images on the internet. I did not realise it was wrong, until Takara_Soong informed they weren't showing up.

Thank you very much, Takara_Soong, for the information.

I usually use my own site to hotlink pictures. Also, if you use Comcast, they give you about 25 megs of online storage space.

Hotlinking can be a problem for webmasters, especially for large sites that get a lot of traffic. If we here at STF were to go over our alloted amount of monthly bandwidth (Which we've only done 1 or 2 times) it would cost me $10 for an additional 5GB of bandwidth if I needed it.

As it is we here at STF now have up to 100GB of bandwidth available to us and we're using about half of that per month so I encourage everyone to go ahead and save whatever images you want to use here onto your hard drive and then use the upload feature here to upload them to our server. That way you are using our bandwidth that I pay for rather then using someone elses bandwidth that someone else has to pay for. If you want to use those images at other sites besides here at STF then you could look into one of the free servers that have been mentioned.

If you're unsure how to upload images here just ask one of the Mods or myself and we can help you out.

If you use Mozilla Firefox to browse the Net, there is an easier way. Get the Imageshack Transloader extension. Because, for security purposes, Firefox may not allow you to install from sites other than Mozilla, you may have to save the file to your hard drive and then File>Open File to get it installed. Reboot Firefox, and then any image you want to post, right click and choose "Upload to Imageshack", and it will open Imageshack in a new tab and give you the codes and the direct-link URL.

Another option... Make a new bookmark with the following as the location:

n<document.images.length;n++){t+='<a href=/ onclick=\'document.f.url.value=document.images['+n+'].src;document.f.submit();return false;\'><img border=0 src='+document.images[n].src+'></a> '};if(t!=''){document.write('<html><head><title>ImageShack%C2%AE</title><link rel=stylesheet href=http://www.imageshack.us/img/style-def.css type=text/css></head><body bgcolor=#F7F7F7><table border=1 cellpadding=5 cellspacing=0 class=table_decoration align=center width=760><tr><td><iframe src=http://www.imageshack.us/adsframe2.php scrolling=no allowtransparency=true frameborder=0 width=700 height=300><a href=http://www.getfirefox.com>Get FireFox!</a></iframe><p>ImageShack has found the following images on this page.</p><p>Click on any image to host it on ImageShack, or press the back button to return to the previous page.</p><form name=f action=http://imageshack.us/transload.php method=post><input type=hidden name=url></form>'+t+'</td></tr></table></body></html>');void(document.close())}else{alert('There are no images to host on this page.')}

Trust me, it works. Sounds silly, but when you access that bookmark, it sucks all the images from the site into a new tab, and clicking any of them will transload it to Imageshack.

Lastly, if you just go to http://www.imageshack.us and click on "Need to transload an image?", it will ask for the URL to the image. Right click on the image you want to transload, choose Properties, highlight the URL, right click, and choose Copy. Go back to the Imageshack page, right click in the URL entry field and choose Paste.

No need to even download the image to your computer.

And lastly, let it be known, this is not to contradict anything the mods/admins have posted here... it's just neutral tech advice.

Um... They look the same to me. The only issues I have with photobucket as far is screw-ups is that gifs sometimes get f'ed up.

Only diff I see is that the VP makes the teeth appear a shade or two lighter.

Which means Villagephoto is sponsored by Crest, who reminds you to brush at least twice a day, for at least two minutes. And don't forget brush your gums to help fight the disease known as gingivitis. Brushing your tongue can also be effective in fighting bad breath. Everyday, more and more people are making the switch to Crest for one reason only: results. Why not pick up a tube on your next trip to the supermarket and see what the word of mouth is all about? Crest: and your mouth will thank you!

(also available in handy pump and new NeatSqueeze™)

I can see a rather large difference in quality, it looks like Villagephotos is re-encoding the images and reducing their resolution to make the images smaller. The Villagephotos version is just under 4.89k while the Photobucket is 11.5k.

Agreed. The resolution of the first image looks far inferior to the resolution of the second to me. Look at the area around her neckline and the distortion there. Same with her facial features.

I use Image Event myself but it is a pay site. I can upload a huge amount of material and not just images but audio, video and other formats as well. It's not very excpensive so I don't mind paying the fee.

That is pretty much like my site. I also have a lot of bandwidth.
